#WatchingBrief is back with a report on new work by archaeologists from @mastarchaeology.bsky.social and a UK nuclear scientist which casts doubt on one of the most widely reported tropes in marine salvage, that the search for pre-nuclear steel drives the looting of shipwrecks from WW1 and WW2.
Honoured to present the case at @unesco.org for satellite monitoring to detect bad actors at sea using our #MaritimeObservatory, partnership with #OceanMind. Here the case of the looting of #HMSPRINCEOFWALES in the South China Sea by the Chinese barge #ChuanHong68 (full story on MASTβs website).

Beforeβ¦and after. John Lethbridgeβs model diving apparatus. He built his in 1715 and became a prolific shipwreck salvor. Weβve rebuilt our model now @bumaritime.bsky.social #MaritimeHistory #salvage #shipwrecks
That is incorrect. This article explains why.
Recent high-profile incidents of scrap-metal salvors illegally targeting the sunken remains of Second World War warships have drawn attention to the vulnerability of historic shipwrecks around the world.

Youβve all seen her gun. Hereβs the #SSEastfield bell and possibly a gun sight (we need to study it carefully to be certain). Youβll remember the merchantship was torpedoed in the south western approaches off Cornwall in November 1917 @bumaritime.bsky.social #MaritimeHistory
So thatβs a wrap. We have 10,337 artefacts and 27% of these are in active decay #maritimeHistory The next major step is to conserve them. Hereβs Holly and Ian at the end of their marathon month in #Poole @bumaritime.bsky.social @bournemouthuni.bsky.social

Today we have been examining the #SSEastfield gun - we like a challenge and this is up there! It's a real mishmash -a French 90 mm 1877 cannon from land married to a 1905 Hotchkiss quick firing gun mount with a recoil system added in 1917. It will need a lot of conservation @bumaritime.bsky.social
