#WatchingBrief is back with a report on new work by archaeologists from @mastarchaeology.bsky.social and a UK nuclear scientist which casts doubt on one of the most widely reported tropes in marine salvage, that the search for pre-nuclear steel drives the looting of shipwrecks from WW1 and WW2.

You’ve all seen her gun. Here’s the #SSEastfield bell and possibly a gun sight (we need to study it carefully to be certain). You’ll remember the merchantship was torpedoed in the south western approaches off Cornwall in November 1917 @bumaritime.bsky.social #MaritimeHistory

Today we have been examining the #SSEastfield gun - we like a challenge and this is up there! It's a real mishmash -a French 90 mm 1877 cannon from land married to a 1905 Hotchkiss quick firing gun mount with a recoil system added in 1917. It will need a lot of conservation @bumaritime.bsky.social
