I didnβt vote for Schiff in the primary and knew he was not progressive, but his votes now are cowardly and still disappointingβparticularly for someone who talked such a big game during the 1st trump admin
Interesting to read thoughts on liberty from >50 years ago - lots of insights on how discourse has changed. Many debates, like the relationship between freedom from interference and material conditions can fall out of fashion without ever being resolved. cactus.utahtech.edu/green/B_Read...
Sad to hear of the death of UCLA professor Donald Shoup, who was considered the preeminent scholar of how parking mandates affected housing costs and the look and feel of cities. Was a pleasure to interview him for our old podcast www.latimes.com/homeless-hou...
Kudos for this very specific burn
A rendering of the proposed roundabout at PCH/Webb Way showing the only multi-lane roundabout proposed for the plan. The rending includes crosswalks for pedestrians and separated bike lanes on both intersecting streets.
βA 7-lane highway is not habitable to human beings. Roundabouts donβt need turn lanes, so with this proposed roundabout at Webb Way, we can reduce the highway to 4 lanes across.β

The Census Bureau's TIGER shapefiles are down. So much for making progress on my papers today...
Guess even the outlines of counties, shapes of rivers and lakes, etc are now considered "woke"?
Wrote about how this administration is weaponizing transportation in service of nightmare shit that has no business influencing transportation policy, but more specifically, wtf was up with that line about giving more money to states with more babies

24 Democratic senators voted for the new DOT secretary, who signed this, two days ago
Something to tell your offline normie friends with hiring power: You donβt need a DEI office to hire people of color. This is a great time to double down on (or start) inclusive hiring practices. Diversify your candidate pool by being proactive about where your job listings are posted.
2025 is when vision zero was supposed to be achieved in City of LA
Iβm going to be in Seattle next week - anyone working in data and/or transportation want to meet for coffee?
Do you feel numb to the parade of bad news? Need a jolt to your system? Try the DineLA deal at Sichuan Impression πΆοΈ
I hope this little message gives those who need it today a small boost π
Today I am embedded in mission driven communities (professionally and personally) where all our efforts support improving daily mobility for Californians. I am hopeful about stewarding the next gen of people motivated to join this work. The future is scary and uncertain but I know where to help now.
Iβm hopeful for the future when I think about where I am today compared to 8 yrs ago. I was in a consulting job that actively minimized legal accountability for corporate failure to comply with employment law! I felt hopeless about making the world a better place.

Did anyone else get $10 surfliner tickets?

@hunterowens.net called San Diego a smooth brain city and I feel my brain smoothing out by the minute (complimentary)
Also, the Genasys site is helpful in keeping an eye on evacuation warning and evacuation zones.

looks like that WEA notice might have just gone out to everyone in the County - check County / City websites for the exact order - remember that WEA cells are not perfect and the interfaces for sending the notices are very hard to use
Not what I thought I'd be writing about when I picked the name Torched.
Thanks to everyone for checking in. We're fine. Many of our friends are not fine. I tried my best to describe what's happening with the fires and what LA needs to do now

Since I'm seeing it everywhere:
I worked in LA City Hall when the budget passed. Our office voted No. But the idea that LAFD was "defunded" to increase the LAPD budget is not accurate. Both got increases due to salary hikes. LAFD's deal just happened after the budget process -- LAPD's was before.
Grateful for my neighbors with cats who lent Tallulah food, litter, and a box
PS hope all is well with your people
Got one from yesterday morning a half hour after it broke out!
I do have a cat allergy but I do also have Zyrtec!
Hosting my sister in law and her bf and cat who evacuated Hollywood. Grateful for my neighbors friends: thatβs my mutual aid network
New episode is up! We talk to Derek Guy, @dieworkwear.bsky.socialβaka the Menswear Guyβabout how dense, walkable cities influence what people wear, what the great fashion capitals of the world have in common, how the housing crisis is affecting style, and much more. thewaroncars.org/2025/01/07/1...
Hi I have a blog now! Mainly covering living on Treasure Island/related development and transportation topics but also other things, like archive content from my 2019 attempted LA->Seattle hike, and will probably also cover suing my old landlord in the new year.
