After taking our #Spartina belowground biomass cores at North Inlet-Winyah Bay, we sorted that biomass into three categories. Do different #nitrogen inputs to #saltmarshes affect allocation to long-lived rhizomes, root tissues devoted to resource acquisition, or turnover into the dead biomass pool?
What an amazing team of students who made this possible, Henry and Defne, and especially @myadarsan.bsky.social ! Thank you. That was a wrap on fieldwork for the Not All Nitrogen project (Sept. 2025)! Stay tuned for results and publications.
Picture of a screen announcing the winners of a graduate student award for best oral presentation at this years coastal estuarine research federation meeting.
Congratulations to @myadarsan.bsky.social (and the other winners!) for winning the best grad student talk award at CERF! So well deserved! Thanks for another amazing meeting @cerfscience.bsky.social canβt wait until 2027!
i won best grad student talk!!! first cerf was a success!!!
talk title: exploring fungal-Spartina interactions along an elevation gradient to inform carbon dynamics in salt marshes. Date and time: 11/13/2025 at 2;00PM Room E10-D
mya laying in spartina patens eating a beef stick
Are you still at CERF tomorrow at 2???
Then you should come to my talk and learn about Spartina (alterniflora and patens a double whammy π), fungi, and carbon (oh my)!!
Youβll get to see why I had to lie down every sampling point to have snack time this past field season!!!

A group of six people stand around a display table under a shade tent to talk about using current methods in microbiology to identity sources and types of microbial contamination that may be present in estuarine waters, especially after a rainstorm.
A group of six people, standing under a shade tent, watch a demonstration of oysters and softshell clams filter the water held in separate aquaria, and compare them to an aquarium with clear water, and one with water clouded by microalgae but containing no shellfish.
Fun Trails and Sails event this week showcasing new work centered on how estuary and shellfish health are intertwined and the need for people to foster both. We always get engaged attendees from the local community and make great new connections! 1/5

Mya and Jen stand at their table, with a graphical poster behind them describing current microbial methods and examples of coliform bacteria colonies growing on culture plates displayed on the table. The two methods are to be used side by side.
But if contaminants are in the water, shellfish may ingest those as well, with negative effects on the shellfish and harvestability. @bowenlab.bsky.social and @myadarsan.bsky.social are using new approaches to better identify sources and types of contaminants which may help mediate inputs. 3/5

This is absolute insanity. We must do everything we can to protect our international students right now.
All she did was write an op-ed. That's it. One of my past mentees is a current international student at Tufts. This is absolutely terrifying.
hope to see many of you there!!!

As a former REU student, this sucks. The REU program was my first taste in R1 research while attending a liberal arts college. We need REUs.

AND THERE IS A SINGLE BABY YALL I AM A PLANT MOM!!!
If you are the parent, close relative, mentor, or part of the village of a Black, Latine, or Native college student, then PLEASE check on, pour into, and affirm them.
Trust me when I tell you they are STRUGGLING right now. You don't have to attended the school to remind them "I'm here."
