"Australians lose $13 billion to pokies each year. At least $10 billion in poker-machine losses (84%) come from at-risk gambling according to this calculation"
Just so gross how much pokie profit comes from the vulnerable. New @australiainstitute.org.au analysis:
This is the most incredible book.
Thank you so much! :D :D
The Political Ecology of Climate Change Adaptation was one of the first political ecology books I read as a Master's student and it absolutely sparked my interest in research. So, having
@marcusetaylor.bsky.social engage so closely with my work was a really special experience!
Once I calmed down, my viva was a great experience which lead to a really generative discussion about my work and future directions. I am really thankful to my examiners Mark Usher (UoM) and @marcusetaylor.bsky.social for their engagement with my work.
Really pleased to share that on Monday I passed my PhD viva π Studying for my PhD has been such a privilege thanks to the support I have had from countless people. Particularly, thanks to the endless support of my supervisors, Alison Browne, @natemillington.bsky.social, and Erik Swyngedouw.

Is climate maladaptation "unintentional"? Should it be considered "unanticipated"? Our new article published in Climatic Change digs into this question: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Picture of the top of the new Open Access paper in Global Environmental Change led by Marcus Taylor from Queen's University in Canada. The paper is entitled 'Integrating power, justice and reflexivity into transformative climate change adaptation' and was published on 19 February 2025 and can be found at https://authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S0959-3780(25)00018-4
Figure 1 from the new paper by Taylor et al shows that to make justice the focus of adaptation requires acknowledging power relations, embracing knowledge pluralism, fostering bottom-up actor coalitions and recognising tradeoffs and unintended outcomes of adaptation projects.
π’ New Open Access paper alert!
Led by Marcus Taylor, we argue that projects should centre justice as the primary goal of transformative adaptation by confronting power relations, embracing knowledge pluralism and bottom-up coalitions, & recognising unexpected outcomes. doi.org/10.1016/j.gl... 1/2
