Reaching net zero by 2050 ‘cheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisis’ Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits

Awks for Tories & Reform who want to keep us hooked on fossil fuels: new @theCCCuk report shows transition to net zero will cost less than a single oil shock - £4bn a year - as well as delivering health & security benefits

Interesting it seems similar to criticism Ken Livingston got as mayor of London for being too pro development through things such as this.

Sorry for the questions and thanks for the excellent piece!

Thank you. It's a really interesting piece in it's own right and I really appreciate you answering the question. I guess as a non-Mancunian there is a lot of noise about us following a Manchester model and if this is successful you could argue it's worth it.

Really interesting thank you. Is there anything you guys (or anyone else) have written about how effective it has been at stimulating growth?

Something @sgoodyear.bsky.social points out that I'm reminded of each time people post about the war, gas prices and the need to switch to EVs is that the V in EV stands for "vehicle," not "car." E-bikes are EVs and cities need to create the conditions that will allow more people to adopt them.

This is one of the biggest peeves I have with urban sprawl. If developers and homeowners in the neighbourhoods outside the Henday were forced to pay (either in home price or taxes) fair value for what costs the city absorbs downtown living would be much more attractive financially.

So much will be said about all this in the coming days, but IMO the biggest takeaway is that James Watt and Martin Dickie each pocketed more than the price BrewDog was eventually sold for, while 500 hardworking staff are now out of a job & 220k equity punks don't get a dime.

Absolute charlatans.

This really exposes the lie from the Tech Bros that autonomous robot taxis are the only way to reduce traffic fatalities.

Viscount Rothermere is a crook, a thief and a liar. He spent most of his life pretending to be French to avoid British taxes.
Those unpaid taxes were pure simple theft.
UK government should put him in prison.

A seven-word headline that manages to be both misleading *and* racist.

Last year from January to June 471 people were killed or seriously injured on the roads in Birmingham, UK- and that was celebrated as an 18% reduction on the year before. Population is bigger than Brussels (9 deaths) but smaller than Berlin (55 deaths). We have so much further to go.

All those billionaires and CEOs who loudly declared they were leaving New York for Dubai when Mamdani was elected mayor may have missiles falling on their luxury resorts right now, but at least they escaped free bus access and a handful of subsidised supermarkets. A small price to pay, surely

In fairness I think Polanski said this at the start of the campaign, with no Burnham it was the greens for the taking and that therefore allowed more resource to be put in.

Streeting is just better at politics than Starmer. I know there isn't lots of love for him here, but he would at least try to win elections with competence rather than just some Reform.

As journalists working today many of us are taught to recognise disinformation when we see it and fight back against it.

Unfortunately there are some who willingly seek it out and put it on their front pages. A disgrace to the profession.

42 million Americans are on food stamps, but Trump has a limitless supply of $2 million Tomahawk missiles to drop on Iran when Israel and Saudi Arabia - the latter of which is home to the world’s most profitable company - come calling…🤔

The current argument of the British right is that Muslims turned out in "blocs" with "family voting" to cast their ballots for a party led by a gay Jewish man, and this shows that multiculturalism has failed, voting is "sectarian" and we are in a crisis.

Hmmmmmm.

Greens massively helped by being able to attract normal people to stand for them rather than the most insane media pundit booking.

Loving that the party whose slogan is ‘Family. Community. Country’ are now claiming that they lost because of ‘family voting’.
