Earth’s future written in stone: How geoscientists in Ireland use Ice Age boulders to forecast climate change
Researchers are chipping away at the climate mysteries found in Ireland’s mountains of geological evidence.
Climate scientists at the University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin have teamed up to study the extent of glaciation in Ireland during the last ice age. Their research will inform and improve future climate models and predictions.

NASA’s Retiring Top Scientist Says We Can Terraform Mars and Maybe Venus, Too (Published 2022)
Jim Green has shaped much of the space agency’s scientific inquiry for decades.
Dr. Jim Green, a retired NASA scientist, discusses the possibility of terraforming other planets in the solar system. The idea of living on the red planet under a giant magnetic shield makes me think of the Biosphere 2 experiment.

These experiments focus on thermophoresis, the phenomenon of particle migration due to a temperature gradient. Particle movement is usually influenced by fluid density, and thus gravity, which is why these tests are being conducted in space.

Lehigh Professors to Conduct Experiments in Space to Study Thermophoresis
Experiments designed by researchers James Gilchrist, Kelly Schultz and Xuanhong Cheng head to the International Space Station to escape the limits of gravity.
Experiments designed by Lehigh University researchers are being sent to the International Space Station.
The data and analysis of these experiments may help scientists detect the presence of diseases in bodily fluids in the future.

I think my next read will be The Glass Universe by Dava Sobel! It focuses on a group of women employed by the Harvard Observatory in the mid-1800s to interpret the findings of the university's astronomers. These women ended up making their own stellar discoveries.

Dark Matter Clumps Float Between Galaxies, Data Shows
Astronomers have found clumps of dark matter 30,000 light-years wide in the space between galaxies in the distant universe.
A team of Japanese astronomers recently discovered clumps of dark matter between far-away galaxies. Their findings prove previous theories that dark matter is made up of "cold," slow-moving particles.

The Seneca Falls Women's History Museum's collection includes a spacesuit worn by astronaut Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a Space Shuttle mission.
I remember visiting years ago and reading about her accomplishments and being so inspired to pursue a career in science.

Past missions, like Hayabusa2, have brought back asteroid regolith with traces of RNA-building proteins and signs that asteroid impacts may have brought water to Earth. Who knows what we will learn from this Bennu sample? #OSIRISREx

I recently read
Andy Weir's The Martian, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys science fiction or has an interest in astronomy. The radical challenges faced by Mark Watney and his creative solutions kept the plot moving and kept me curious and engaged!

A NASA Spacecraft Comes Home With an Asteroid Gift for Earth
The seven-year OSIRIS-REX mission ended on Sunday with the return of regolith from the asteroid Bennu, which might hold clues about the origins of our solar system and life.
The NASA Osiris Rex spacecraft returned to Earth this past Sunday, after a seven year journey around the solar system, with half a pound of dirt.
The dirt is from Bennu, a near-Earth asteroid, and scientists believe it may hold cosmological secrets.
