A review of the proceedings from four major computer-science conferences showed that none from 2021, and all from 2025, had fake citations.

Last month, the Polish president vetoed the long-overdue bill implementing the #DSA using some bizarre, unclear arguments that referred to a proposal no longer on the table. h.
I write about it today in Kultura Liberalna (in Polish).
re bubbles bursting, I went recently deep into the allegories of tulipmania, here's one by one of the brueghels
Before the Commission published the first fine against X under the DSA in December, the NYT reported that EU regulators considered βfining X more than $1 billionβ.
The now public decision reveals how the Commission arrived at β¬120 million - and what the ceiling for future fines is.
should print this on a shirt

ok but how is it almost the end of the year and we still have no news on the EDPS elections?

In the recent EUCO Debrief TEPSA - Trans European Policy Studies Association, you can find my (very, very) critical comment on the #DigitalOmnibus Proposal.
I argue that the initiative undermines the fundamental values of the EU without enhancing the competitiveness of European operators. π§΅
Thank you!

3οΈβ£ Finally, the proposed changes are built on a false dichotomy between competitiveness and fundamental rights; instead, these values should be treated as complementary.
2οΈβ£ Secondly, the proposal creates more uncertainty than clarity, which will only create a greater burden for small and medium-sized companies.
1οΈβ£ First, because it will be applicable to all operators, including non-European ones, it is unclear how it will incentivise the European players.

Two years into Europeβs Digital Services Act, data access for researchers is on life support, write Mark Scott and LK Seiling. Yet an alternative future is possibleβone built on openness, interoperability, and platforms that treat data access as a civic and scientific good.
We filled a complaint against Ireland to the European Commission today.
Ireland has appointed an ex-Meta lobbyist as its new Data Protection Commissioner.
This will be interpreted by the tech industry as a signal of impunity.
The European Commission must intervene.

Both TikTok and Meta are breaching the DSA, according to EU Commission. The platforms are not transparent enough with their data for research use, and Meta makes reporting illegal content and appealing moderation decisions too difficult.
I was just once again going through these, and it was for me shocking how itβs the same discussion all over again, not only in the context of the GDPR but also the DSA, DMA, DACT, DGA and the AI Act.
Nothing new but also not sure whether we learned much during these 30 years.
and so sources, many dating back to the late 1980s-mid1990s, on the DPAs scarce resources! This quote from @douwekorff.bsky.social ended up as an inspiration for my work: the DPAs βsee themselves much more like advisors, facilitators, and conciliators than as policemen: referees rather than Rambosβ
For example, the Commission initially opposed introducing the rules because it would βhurt the businessesβ. Eventually, the narrative has shifted after the debate was reframed into βinternal market buildingβ (according to a very interesting book by @abenewman.bsky.social thanks to the DPAs).
One of the most interesting tropes I found when doing my phd research on the enforcement of the gdpr was when I was going through old papers and books published around the time the 1995 Data Protection Directive had been introduced. π§΅
