Question: if hail of 2-3.5” warrants only the middle orange color, what size range would push it to red or pink? 😳

3.5” is nearly softball (3.8”)!

The news from Rep. Neguse (D-CO) that OMB is already negotiating contracts to sell off NCAR properties jives with my suspicion that the public comment process at NSF would amount to a hill of beans.

The comment period is still open, should you wish to register your beans

Thread reissue to correct an error on my part:

A few thoughts about the news that Gov. Whitmer's office wants to prove why no tornado watch was issued for the Three Rivers-Union City tornadoes - we can take this moment to be more introspective and and ask some important questions 1/18

Color me jade(d?). Since it’s a political decision divorced from reason, then why would any appeal to logic or science matter? I expect the person making the decision (Vought?) to simply shrug, say β€œnoted” and move ahead anyway.

But maybe I’m missing something

There are A LOT of new features and improvements, especially with ECMWF data as I've wrapped the ecmwf-opendata client and added the WxData features to it. [1/2]

This makes me sad. I don’t imagine the reanalysis takes much processing time or power to run

If you or someone you know has interest in this open-rank position, we begin reviewing applications soon! Though the title highlights radar meteorology, we're highly interested in folks with expertise in meteorology on the mesoscale and the convective scale.

Could it be explained by compaction offsetting the new precipitation?

I’ve read the NWS manuals (of course every time I search, slightly different guidance comes up) on snow measurement multiple times. Seems like the total depends heavily on when you clean the snow board and how to handle drifting

Using all public storm reports from the NWS so far, I contoured a preliminary estimated snow accumulation map for today's blizzard (through 6-8pm EST tonight).

Truly a historic storm - both in terms of impacts, and the forecast challenges leading up to it.

2 inches more from 1-2 pm. Now up to ~35” (we will see what the official measurement says, since the 33” SNINCR ob came in at 32.8”)

Also, first hour since 5 am without blizzard conditions (1/4 mi visibility and 35 mph winds). Visibility is now at 1/2 mile
