The actual value communicated would be a reconfigured service model, which the library could choose from a variety of emerging options, from a digital innovation hub to a community-engaged library (Mathews, 2025). To implement this new service model, the library would likely have to reallocate time and resources from organizational focuses that have been and often still are our mainstay. These include legacy systems and procedures like ILS, discovery layers, acquisitions, cataloging, physical collections, and serials.

I have two questions as follow-up:

1. What academic library hasn't already cut our funding and resources for technical services down to a bare minimum already?

and

2. At what point do we just give up and stop being a library?

I'm not being facetious.

If you hear about layoffs of archival workers and your first concern is whether or not you'll still have access to the collection for your own research, you're the problem.

If you are mad about a newspaper's summer reading list including made-up books, maybe you don't actually like fiction and have a mind bereft of Borgesian imagination. You're mad you can't "buy" these books? Good. Some things are not for the market, actually, you capitalist bootlicker.

Rep. Laurel Libby, R-Auburn, recently used my second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, and that of my teammate in the 800-meter run, to malign Soren Stark-Chessa, the trans-identified athlete who finished first.

One of the reasons I chose to run cross-country and track is the community: Teammates cheering each other on, athletes from different schools coming together, and the fact that personal improvement is valued as much as, if not more than, the place we finish.

Last Friday, I ran the fastest 1,600-meter race I have ever run in middle school or high school track and earned varsity status by my school’s standards. I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved. The fact that someone else finished in front of me didn’t diminish the happiness I felt after finishing that race. I don’t feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points.

We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school. Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren’s participation in the girls’ track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep. Libby, who want to take sports away from some kids just because of who they are.

American Schools Were Deeply Unprepared for ChatGPT, Public Records Show Thousands of pages of documents show school districts around the country did not understand how much ChatGPT would change their classrooms, and pro-AI consultants filled in some of the gaps.

I FOIAed every state's dept of education to see what they were telling teachers about ChatGPT / how they were training them on it, and the situation was bleak. My writeup, pulled from thousands of pages of presentations, emails, and other documents:

MOUSE KLUB is imo one of the key queer films of the 70s β€” a scathing satire of Fred Halsted, clone culture, Americana, and M*cky M*use. Its last public screening was at the second-ever Frameline in 1978, where it reportedly nearly caused a riot.

Frankly, I see this as further evidence of the hollowing-out of the value of professional education. If an MLS is just a way to pay-to-play for higher salaries, instead of a way to engage with and prepare for professional practice, it makes sense to feel this way. But this is a different problem.
