I’m a proud secondary teacher and Head of English, teaching IBDP Language & Literature, Global Politics and TOK. I’m also a PhD candidate at Deakin University researching the affective intensities of critical literacy in the secondary English classroom✨

School is back, and I’ve started off the year using the Question Sort technique I learned in a @trevormackenzie.bsky.social PD in every class. Students write questions on post-its, then categorise the questions, then we discuss. They’re engaged, owning their learning, THINKING, and working together!
I’ve heard people say that AI could help teacher workload issues, but as a HOD, it’s added to my workload because now I spend my time chasing students whose work has been flagged as AI and trying to get to the bottom of what is their work and what isn’t.
Congratulations!!
I’ve been playing with grey scale as well! It helps a lot, especially if I do a tonal study all in one colour. Introducing other colours is what makes it hard for me but I’m learning to ‘see’ differently now
I’m still learning a lot. I struggle with value and perspective, but for me it’s all about play and experimentation. This mystical guy is my favourite painting!
Gorgeous! I’ve started doing watercolour painting this year and I’m so happy I did. Even just making blobs on a page gives me a sense of calm and fulfilment
Amaaaazing! That must mean you’re doing a great job! It’s a challenging journey, but very rewarding. Just hard not to get distracted with all the things you want to read when you should be writing
Kate, congratulations! These milestones are so important to celebrate!!!
I’m bummed I missed yours on the last day! I didn’t even know about it until I read the write-up on the blog. It sounded fantastic
Transcending the Academy: Post-Massage Inquiry and Being a Silly Goose
The authors gratefully acknowledge Julie’s peer review for helping to bring the lols
😂😂😂😂 I cannot top this
Truly living the theories
Thrilled to report I am no longer existing in the human realm after my post-conference massage blasted me into another dimension ✨✨✨
Me and @steven-d-roberts.bsky.social piece on misogyny and extremism has just been republished by VOX-Pol (originally in @theconvo-bot.bsky.social).

Dr Ellie Mohammadi Foomani shared her research on co-designing with preservice teachers to help them experience relational and restorative pedagogies. A transformative process leading to joy and authenticity for the researchers and autonomy and self-efficacy for preservice teachers 💞 #AARE2024
My true love
I love it; you’ve captured my essence!
Thank you to @tanjinashraf.bsky.social for your thoughtful words on my presentation and for capturing this incredible picture of me being serious and scholarly
My pleasure! Wish you were here!
Dr Amanda McKay presented her chapter with Dr Stephanie Wescott on teacher guilt in testing regime. A very moving and beautifully theorised analysis of the clash between teacher values and actions in data-centric school cultures. Rip down the data walls! @chalkhands.bsky.social #AARE2024
I’m still so mad
Katrina Lawrence-Honeycomb on what is holding us back from achieving gender equality: a thorough and thoughtful policy analysis on how gender stereotypes, the illusion of equal choice, and silences in policy stop any meaningful progress. The usual story of individualising problems 🙄 #AARE2024
Dr Stephanie Wescott presented on institutional gaslighting. Drawing on >100 responses of teachers reporting sexism and harassment, she argues that the patriarchal epistemologies of school prevent women’s experiences being recognised. An absolute superstar @drstephaniewescott.bsky.social #AARE2024
Prof Mindy Blaise, A. Prof Jacqueline Ullman and A. Prof Emily Gray shared their research on everyday sexisms in universities. Unsurprisingly, women reported experiencing biases while men reported not believing the complaints. Might go scream into a pillow now. #AARE2024
Rochelle Banks presents her autoethnographic exploration of sexual harassment within educational institutions. The Bro Code: a workplace culture of hypermasculine male privilege - so many absolutely disgusting examples of a toxic environment. A brilliant and moving presentation #AARE2024
You are too kind!
