The weird smallness of rock music where - when you’re learning about it - you get to the point where Carol King says “Okay, can we hire a babysitter who can’t sing?” because her original nanny was Little Eva.

QT’s play sounds vaguely like something Wes Anderson would do. Tarantino hasn’t said much about this Anderson - he’s said he loved GRAND BUDAPEST while not loving his other films - but he did say he didn’t find Max Fischer funny. Which tracks because Max is kind of a critique of Tarantino.
Seeing an ad for AI summaries and it points out that there’s so many people who don’t get art. They just don’t seem to understand it on more than a surface level. The problem is that these people think they know. They think eating food makes them a cook. Think parroting critiques is criticism.
Listened to the DGA nominee podcast and 4/5 represent minorities, but only PTA overtly made a movie about Trump. I think it’s fair to ask: Is someone who uses their privilege to shine a light on injustice worth rewarding over minorities who cannot? And isn’t that the industry encouraging dissent?
It functions as a movie and a “movie” at the same time. It’s a singular cinematic achievement. It doesn’t cheat, but also, it doesn’t have to add up because the reveal is about taking responsibility, not about someone who needs meds.
Revisited FIGHT CLUB, and though it has toxic fans, one of the reasons why I have been in love with this film is that the last thirty minutes of the film’s plot are mostly unimportant. The film’s dialogue with the audience transcends the plot, because it’s not really about psychosis or terrorism.
If America wants to be taken seriously as a global power, I don’t think we can do it without calling the modern Republican party a terrorist movement that needs to be eradicated. I don’t know how we can be taken seriously without having a solution to “they elected a monster, but won’t again.”
I think a lot of AI shit is trying to be like Neo in THE MATRIX saying “I know King Fu.” It’s just, you can’t download intelligence or skills. Some people are more intuitive than others, but that’s about it.
Daylight savings time didn’t bother me growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I think because in December it’s just going to be wet and dreary. There’s something depressing about it in LA because it may be 80, even 90 out in the winter, but the sun still sets at 5pm.
Oscars are often won by creating narratives, often “how amazing was that?” or a general “owed/it’s time.” I don’t think there’s many narratives this year. If Michael B. Jordan’s nomination didn’t initially feel like part of the SINNERS bandwagon “playing twins” could have made it an easy win.
I think why cringe comedy is so hit and miss for me is because years ago I was celebrating a birthday with friends on a day off and a coworker called to commiserate that I had been let go, which I hadn’t been yet. I had to go in on Monday to be let go. That’s objectively hilarious. From the outside.
When I flew to Portland on Wednesday, a pink haired lady crashed my exit row only to be told off by a stewardess. On my flight home the same pink haired lady had the same flight. We chatted. As lotteries have to have winners, it was cool but I put no weight on things like that (also she’s engaged).
My friend Tom turned 75 on the day I turned 50. I went to Portland to mark this occasion. After some real protest, he paid for lunch, but I made him promise that when I turn 75 and he turns 100 I get to pay.
NO NO NO YOU DON’T
GUYS LET ME PLEASE SPREAD THE GOSPEL OF FREE TAX USA
federal is free, state is $16, handles even my chaotic freelancer taxes just fine, same step-by-step “designed for normies” kind of interface as TurboTax but NOT EVIL
tell everyone you know
www.freetaxusa.com
republicans have literally made everything worse and harder and more terrible over the course of my entire life and somehow* they keep coming back to power bc of our feckless corporate press and a weak willed opposition 😒

THE BRIDE never nailed a marketing campaign. I tend to think the difference between its opening and WUTHERING HEIGHTS’s is one got sold well. Which is insane as Jessie Buckley is a current best actress Oscar nominee on the precipice of winning.
For anybody else looking for Full Contact, it just dropped today on Mei Ah's YouTube channel. (h/t @sleeplessgoku135.bsky.social for the find!)

Was hanging with an old friend yesterday, and I feel like - and maybe this isn’t that universal - it’s your friends in your teens and early twenties where someone’s shitty hand me down car is a supporting character in “wild night” stories.
At this point - on top of the Pete Docter BS - there are good reasons to consider all of Pixar tainted as it was born of a sexist serial harasser. I’m sure some people will stop watching Pixar, but like Michael Jackson being no bueno, people get irrationally defensive about what they loved as kids.
It’s funny how if boxing is the most cinematic sport, wrestling is one of the least. I think partly because so much professional wrestling is built on kayfabe.
Was hanging with a sober friend and we were at a restaurant ordering drinks and they got an NA, and I was thinking about getting a beer and they said “one of best parts of quitting alcohol is never having to drink IPAs.”
THE SEVENTH CURSE: Showed it to some old friends that I used to show all the real insane trashterpieces (ROCK N ROLL NIGHTMARE, VISITOR Q, THE ROOM, etc.) to on not sober Saturdays. Though we watched it completely sober, it still lived up to those fun weekends of WTF cinema.
PREDATOR: BADLANDS: I didn’t give a fuck about anything that happened in this movie.
One of the things about certain people who look boyish or girlish, be it a Mickey Rooney or Leonardo DiCaprio, Sissy Spacek or Jennifer Connelly, is that you can make the jump to adult or you can’t, regardless of sexualization. You might have a filthy private life, but the camera doesn’t read that.
Went to Powell’s and seeing a lot of books reminds me of Democratic centrism where you’re trying to sell books to people who don’t read so you write a parody REAL HOUSEWIVES cooking book.
Though I get that it’s because of multiple little reasons and has happened previous, it’s kind of weird that a Pixar movie is being released outside of summer or Holiday season. But also, wouldn’t you want to target school holidays?
Because we can’t control what we see with social media, often internet jokes hit a saturation point where you might not think about it, but that 27th time (or whatever the line crossing moment is) and you know if someone says “surprise” you might start thinking “Some fries, Mother Fucker.”
What's with these guys' use of the word "kinetic?" Where did that come from? Did someone focus-group test it and tell politicians to all start using it or what?
Watching I’LL SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD and it’s funny that Mike Hodges’ career started and ended with two films with the same leads where the first is a masterpiece of genre (GET CARTER, CROUPIER) and the follow up is a missfire (PULP, this).
