Since the beginning of the war, community kitchens, or what people here call "tekayas" (soup kitchens), have sprung up across the Gaza Strip. These kitchens were a lifeline for many families, the only source of a simple meal to keep people afloat during famine. Every day, people stood in long lines waiting for a meager dish of food, but it meant life itself to them. But at the beginning of July, these kitchens suddenly closed their doors after running out of the basic ingredients they relied on for cooking. There was no more flour, no rice, nothing left to make into a meal to feed the hungry. With the closure of these kitchens, one of the last remaining sources of food for the people was extinguished, and a new, more severe form of suffering began.

Little by little, hunger began to show on faces and bodies. We could see the emaciation clearly in people's features, and we witnessed fainting and dizziness daily in the camp's alleyways and among the tents. Hunger was everywhere: in tired eyes, in slow steps, and in the heavy silence that hung over the place. The most heartbreaking scene was when we began transferring the elderly to hospitals, hoping that intravenous fluids would help them regain the energy and strength their bodies had lost. We clung to any hope, however small. But the harsh reality was that many of those frail bodies could no longer withstand the hunger, worn down by the long wait and the lack of food. That was one of the most brutal chapters of the famine we endured in the camp.
