The other thing we've proven is that the bias against poor people being poor and spending money "wrong" is bullshit; people disapprove of each other's decisions all the time, but somehow feel entitled to dictate how poor folks run their households.

The Discourse has become sort of numb to the fact that the richest guy on earth and owner of a major social media platform just routinely spits out the kind of nakedly white supremacist shit that until a decade ago you rarely saw outside of places like Stormfront.

The article should be a wakeup call to municipalities around the US. 1st, this emergency isn’t so sudden at all. There have been discussions for a decade. 2nd, instead of working to fix the impending disaster, the local community leaders kept adding huge industrial users. Sounds like data centers!

One for me is that I spent so many years believing that resistance to change was from things like lack of understanding or fear of new habits and ways of living. I (naive, and proximal to empire) couldn't really hold the possibility that us all surviving wasn't a shared goal.

Bad take. UBI is unconditional access to resources. It says, "I trust you. Show me what you can do." It is the power to refuse until the pay is right. It is the freedom to choose paid or unpaid work. It fosters community and societal participation.

And ending survival fear is a psychological need.

The same idea, more or less, is behind Universal Basic Income: make people less poor, you make their lives suck less, they have much better mental health outcomes (among other things), they become more productive members of society.

My hottest mental health take:

A lot of depression and anxiety is situational, and warranted, because people live in shit circumstances. They’re poor, without resources, etc. and the reason it’s become popular to blame “mental health” is because it’s a way of evading responsibility.

When we talk about genocides in the U.S., there are the many genocides of tribal nations that have been ongoing for centuries. There is also the genocide of Black people, the conditions of which have never gone away. This can be useful historical context for things happening now.

I know people are very sensitive about the use of the word “genocide” but the attempts to medically eliminate trans children is very clearly meets the standard because they are trying to eliminate a population and also they know some of those kids are going to kill themselves

Folks, don't use AI! Don't let your kids use AI. It strip-mines the soul. Stay away!
