'AI Is African Intelligence': The Workers Who Train AI Are Fighting Back
Kenyan workers are still the underpaid labor behind AI training, moderation, and sex chatbots. The Data Labelers Association is fighting back.
In Kenya, we spoke to the data labelers powering U.S. AI companies. They include someone who had to watch porn all day, annotate it, then had to flirt and sext with people over an AI chatbot. The users thought they were sexting an AI. It was actually a person.

What if I told you I not only hate AI, but I kind of hate phone too?
I had a great time chatting with @xoxogossipgita.bsky.social about how the tech industry has steered technology in the wrong direction, and it’s no wonder so many people are getting fed up with the companies and their products.

Senator Warren: How much would it cost to extend the ACA’s enhanced premium tax credits for just one year?
Witness: About $30 billion.
Senator Warren: The Trump administration says this war [with Iran] will cost $50 billion. That means we could help all the people pushed off their health care and still have an additional $20 billion left over.
Instead of going to war with Iran, we could cover health care for millions of Americans.
And still have $20 billion left over.

Reynolds signs Iowa law barring local trans civil rights protections
City and county civil rights commissions may no longer protect Iowans from gender identity-based discrimination under a law signed by Gov. Reynolds.
Within just a few hours of this morning's genocide warning from the Lemkin Institute, the 4th Circuit ruled that trans adults can have our care banned and be forced by any means to "appreciate our sex", and Iowa made it ILLEGAL to protect trans people.

Exit Condition
On Alderson Loops, Billionaire Cruelty, and Living Inside the Trap

I spent the last week writing up this essay on what it means to be trans in this moment. What it means to live under authoritarianism as the scapegoated minority of the moment and how it feels inescapable as an infinite loop.

It's looking increasingly like these guys thought that if they could wreak more death and destruction than the other side then they would be respected as strong powerful men and they would "win" and that would make them big important heroes. Very possibly they had no rationale deeper than that.

This sounds like somebody who grew up rich trying to imagine what poor people sound like.
We know how cash money works FAR BETTER than you do. You might know systems like stocks & IRAs & bonds & trust funds, but we do know cash money. We know SNAP doesn’t buy EVERYTHING at the grocery store.

Trump Administration Quietly Moves to Strip Food Aid From Millions
The regulatory change would impact an estimated 6 million low-income Americans — including nearly 2 million children.
The Trump administration is pushing a SNAP rule change that could strip food aid from about 6 million low-income people, including nearly 2 million children, even as it spends billions on the Iran war.

The other thing we've proven is that the bias against poor people being poor and spending money "wrong" is bullshit; people disapprove of each other's decisions all the time, but somehow feel entitled to dictate how poor folks run their households.
UBI provides resources, not judgement.

The Discourse has become sort of numb to the fact that the richest guy on earth and owner of a major social media platform just routinely spits out the kind of nakedly white supremacist shit that until a decade ago you rarely saw outside of places like Stormfront.

The article should be a wakeup call to municipalities around the US. 1st, this emergency isn’t so sudden at all. There have been discussions for a decade. 2nd, instead of working to fix the impending disaster, the local community leaders kept adding huge industrial users. Sounds like data centers!

One for me is that I spent so many years believing that resistance to change was from things like lack of understanding or fear of new habits and ways of living. I (naive, and proximal to empire) couldn't really hold the possibility that us all surviving wasn't a shared goal.

Bad take. UBI is unconditional access to resources. It says, "I trust you. Show me what you can do." It is the power to refuse until the pay is right. It is the freedom to choose paid or unpaid work. It fosters community and societal participation.
And ending survival fear is a psychological need.

The same idea, more or less, is behind Universal Basic Income: make people less poor, you make their lives suck less, they have much better mental health outcomes (among other things), they become more productive members of society.

My hottest mental health take:
A lot of depression and anxiety is situational, and warranted, because people live in shit circumstances. They’re poor, without resources, etc. and the reason it’s become popular to blame “mental health” is because it’s a way of evading responsibility.

When we talk about genocides in the U.S., there are the many genocides of tribal nations that have been ongoing for centuries. There is also the genocide of Black people, the conditions of which have never gone away. This can be useful historical context for things happening now.

I know people are very sensitive about the use of the word “genocide” but the attempts to medically eliminate trans children is very clearly meets the standard because they are trying to eliminate a population and also they know some of those kids are going to kill themselves

I tried watching (modern) Matlock but the whole “opioids are the devil that should be wiped off the face of the earth” storyline was so fucking ableist it made me want to scream every time it came up - and it was like the entire conceit of the plot.
