growing up on sonic romhacking and then taking a look at the SMW community feels crazy. yall are still on the "closed-source tool that forces a bunch of patches on you" era? the guy gets mad and starts threatening people when they try to reimplement any of it? bro the sonic 1 disasm is older than me
These games are in fact amazing. I like 1 a fair bit and think 2 is somehow even better. I haven't played Robbit Mon Dieu yet but only because I'm still waiting on a complete fan translation when I've generally heard the writing is its strongest point.
Oh and as you can imagine btw I did in fact mute the thread at this point. Y'all have a nice time discussing things from here just like, yeah wow, really. Some people really think they're a lot more creative and funny than they actually are.
So, I just saw a slur-derived insult in my notifications. If you're wondering why I don't like to jump in with Palworld discourse usually, it's because its most vocal fanbase and most vocal detractors seems to have the kinds of people who think slurs are creative/funny insults. It's 2026, c'mon now.
I agree those two are more obviously inspiration at most than even close to outright plagiarism for what it's worth, and I'm no big Nintendo fan. But, did you have to use a slur-derived insult in 2026 that wouldn't even be funny or creative even if it was acceptable? C'mon. Get better material!
To be fair, one solution to this one is to set the slope collisions up to be offset a bit so they visually work how they should. But... yeah. Still an annoyance.
Might be part of why I keep coming back to Fusion for some things lol
I'd be curious to know more about that one, but I haven't been able to find much overall, so... probably a bit of a dead end thing to research sadly.
Oh, and while I'm here, for completeness on one more thing, I, uh... don't like the patent lawsuit nonsense Nintendo tried to pull.
Well, I'll hand you the best(?) source I'd been able to find then in the interest of completeness of what info I have! I feel like I remember getting... odd vibes from this site in the past even if I can't remember why, and I'm not fond of the tone of the article, but: www.cbr.com/palworld-emp...
I've seen some people who attempted to refute it who used a Google Translate as well but apparently that was inaccurate, so it's... probably not helping matters on me trying to find sources one way or another that may be more or less trustworthy...
Oh yeah... I don't trust the sources I've been able to find on this but there was word in the past I found in trying to find all this again that a former Pocket Pair employee was commenting about 2 years ago on being asked by the CEO to copy Pokemon designs... do you possibly have better sources?
Most of the most suspicious stuff wasn't exactly like, completely concrete or anything at least.
Admittedly, I think the fact that the hair on one of the designs dented in a very similar way to a Pokemon when that Pokemon had beads in its hair that impacted said hair design, wherein the Palworld design had no such hair beads yet had the same dents, was a bit eyebrow-raising myself, but...
I haven't played Black Knight, but that kinda reminds me of the opening of Sonic Adventure 2 somehow, and honestly that kinda makes me think I need to play Black Knight even more than before because I actually really enjoy juxtaposition of that sort for some reason lol
"Compared to Pickmon, however, Palworld feels like a paragon of creative integrity. Pickmon hasn't filed the serial number off of PokΓ©monβit's just crossed it out with crayon."

Like, no really, thanks for helping refresh my memory here, seriously! Sometimes I remember bits and pieces but not important details, so I need all the help I can get with these things sometimes.
(...oh, and, fellow former cohost user as well I see... interesting!)
Ah! This is the one I was thinking of!
Thanks, actually pretty helpful.
This one, it's not exactly plagiarism in this one's instance even if it was potentially (maybe even likely?) an influence, but you can see why it'd stick in my mind all the same.
There's a certain kind of defense I see people jump to with the game that gets... tiring.
Nothing is truly immune from criticism, but Palworld seems to have drawn in a kind of fanbase that makes any attempt at serious criticism a lot harder if you don't want people jumping on your case.
Lastly, uh, I did see the... what at least appears to be subtweet you did that was seemingly related to this... and, uh, you could stand to be a bit... nicer.
I'm friends with some people who rather like Palworld, btw. I actually have nothing against people liking the game itself! Just...
Oh, okay fair on this one in particular then I guess!
Unfortunately, there were some other designs too that I recall being perhaps a bit more damning (for example, I think there was a fanmade variant of delphox or something that seemed to be the source of something?) but are harder to dig up now...
Have you ever considered I never actually remarked on whether or not Pokemon was original to begin with until you did?
Have you considered one can criticize a thing while still liking it, like I do with the Metroid series when I don't like some of the stuff Nintendo does with it?
First off, I never said anything about whether Pokemon itself did or did not do any such thing. Second off, it's a false equivalency. A bat that becomes a bigger bat, how original. It's almost like the two designs in question are actually completely different otherwise!
Because they *checks notes* added long hair to one of them that suddenly means it's completely a new design that doesn't at all clearly take any influence at all whatsoever from the fan made design, because that's definitely how something not being a ripoff or plagiarism actually like, works.
They, for one, both feature long red and white striped arms that get larger towards the end with exactly three fingers at the end that are both taking a bit after Chimeco.
But sure, they "don't look alike".
...you sure there's not even a passing similarity between these?
This isn't about if they're literally exactly the same, this is about if they're doing a design that's basically "we took this fan design and made enough changes for maybe a bit of plausible deniability".
*nods*
I wish the internet was still easier to navigate such that stuff like this wasn't necessary, but since that's no longer the internet of today... in cases where it's... still possible, I can certainly still try to dig up the sources where needed, eheh...
A *lotta* people had to delete their Twitter accounts for various reasons in recent history so there's a lot of that which is just a lot harder to dig back up, so like, on some level I get why it's become less and less common of knowledge, to be fair.
The first source linked in this steam thread seems to still be up, but reminder that a lot of the people who would've discussed it would've done so on... the site that formerly was called Twitter, so finding sources is frustratingly difficult now admittedly:
steamcommunity.com/app/1623730/...
I mean, putting aside the whole thing that a lot of Palworld fans also liked to gloss over that they did some of the translations by means of AI instead of actually hiring people to do them with their ridiculous amount of money they made, they did like, actually rip off fanmade designs...
