Let history be a guide
I always thought taxpayer $ for defense lawyers was the most unpopular thing ever yet that changed as people better understood the role of public defenders as essential to the justice system. But I believe any increased pay would have to come with some structural changes... e.g. open primaries

Agree on full time legislators and suggest pay be set at the median full time wage in Oregon- about $68,000 with annual "long" sessions. Also reset the pay for Governor, SOS, AG, BOLI and Treasurer to be pegged to the pay of an Oregon Supreme Court Justice.
