I was a bit shocked by this programme, because I can’t understand how anyone could follow his beat, and it is obvious that the Hallé couldn’t (in the Bruckner). He also has nothing to say about the skill of conducting apart from “you’ve either got it or you haven’t”.

Several hours of delays on a railway line because a lorry collided with a level crossing gate. What does that say about the safety of such a lorry driver on the road in general? I have driven for nearly 50 years and have never hit a gate, barrier, or bridge.

I am generally no fan of ‘positive discrimination’ etc, but I think politics is an allowable exception. Yet another white male leader of Labour is unthinkable. They need a woman or person from the ethnic minorities as the next leader, and that person needs to serve a lengthy stint.
