Inspired by Marie Menken’s Lights (1966), I scratched dotted lines into black-painted glass and photographed it against bright windows and screens. A quick, lo-fi trick turning simple marks into floating strings of colour and light.

Ruth Asawa’s looping wire forms made me think of Spirograph drawings. With a marker, ruler and sheets of acetate, I built quick cones of cross-hatching and photographed them to coax out that same floating sense of volume.

More β€˜fundus photography’: an ad-hoc set-up of glass, latex, water and ink, photographed outdoors. The eyes have it, as they say.

Vertigogo (2022) A short film inspired by Saul Bass, made for The Kick-About No.49

Inspired by Saul Bass’s urgent titles for Hitchcock’s Psycho, Vertigogo strips things back to dots, dashes and sliding lines β€” tension built from almost nothing.

An outsized leather sofa, still swaddled in plastic, becomes an accidental landscape. Different light turned the creases and folds into ridgelines and Alpine illusions β€” a small act of Romanticism played out in the front room.

I loved this movie! Sally Hawkins was brilliant in this - had me shouting at the television. Best horror movie I've seen in a long time (but had to watch some of the 'teeth stuff' through my fingers...)

Helleborus orientalis always keeps its markings half-hidden, flowers bowed low. I picked and pressed a few, then photographed them on perspex over strong light to dissolve the structure into inky, x-ray-like splashes.

Taken with JoaquΓn Torres-GarcΓa’s tactile toy blocks, I made my own; cardboard box moulds filled with plaster, painted, then sanded back. Smooth, weighty forms made to be arranged and rearranged.

As the last of the sun slipped away, the slopes took on a wintery aspect. The metallic filigree effects produced by the sunlight catching in the old umbrellas of the Hog’s fennel was otherworldly.

Close view of a windswept hillside covered in long, pale grasses and dried wild plants. Bleached straw tones mix with muted greens and hints of rusty red stems, creating a soft, textured surface that fills the frame with late-autumn colour and movement.

A short walk along the blustery seafront brings you to Tankerton Slopesβ€”hog’s fennel and brambles rising above the beach huts. Bleached grasses and skeletal plants turn the hillside into pure texture.

Long-exposure photograph inside a dark, derelict room. A swirling oval of neon light trailsβ€”blue, green and purpleβ€”hovers in mid-air near the ceiling, like a luminous vortex. Below it, old wooden doors lean against the wall, and a window casts faint, cold light into the space, heightening the eerie atmosphere.

From the series '351' - named after the number of the old derelict house in which I stayed all night to capture otherworldly goings-on!
