the thing about "separating the art from the artist" is that it comes from academic circles where they were trying to separate an artist's views from an interpretation of their work as an intellectual exercise, not as a way to give people moral carte blanche to support shitty people

Australia probably has its own distinct norms and sociological patterns, but you can still count on three universal truths:

Anyway I was like “HOW DARE YOU NOT LOVE MY SWEET FICTIONAL BABY” but it’s fine. The group member was working with very little context. And I think the feedback is actually valuable to me. Makes me feel like I’m writing autism correctly, haha.

Allistic people sure do claim to love Autistic characters when they have insights into the character’s thoughts and feelings.

That affection doesn’t always extend to real life autistic people.

Alan Sebastian gets upset and shuts down. Group member thought he was deliberately giving my other character the “silent treatment”.

I feel like I’m getting insights into everything I apparently keep getting wrong in social situations!

When given his POV people think he’s loveable and thoughtful. From the outside, without that context, he appears unkind “manipulative” for just… reacting to the world and not sufficiently masking or filtering that reaction? Ha ha ha. Yeah that’s happened to me too.

I don’t always read things from his POV and I’ve been reading Scott’s POV recently and today someone told me he wasn’t sure if he was supposed to like Alan Sebastian or not and said he seems cold, and manipulative.

And isn’t that an Autistic mood.

So when I read Alan Sebastian POV things in my writing group people often tell me how much they love the character, how unique his POV is and how interesting he is and they love how he thinks and sees the world

Every price you pay to fix the situation is worth not going the wrong way, and starting to go the right way.

Lovely Runner (series, Korea)

Heard good things about this, and it didn’t quite live up to the hype. Romance was cute, but time travel component didn’t thrill me the way I wanted it to. Still a solid story, but no Twinkling Watermelon.

I forgot to come back to this. I can make a pretty great pressure-cooker cheesecake. straightforward recipe. Food processor + crockpot. Delicious!

It’s probably only, like, 20% better than sticking biscoff in lemon-curd flavoured yoghurt though. And a LOT more effort.
