Some cages are certainly better aesthetically than for concealment or comfort. There's also the 'scaping element that may need to be tended to.

You usually lube the outside for the extra gloss effect. And when sliding latex against other latex, for... reasons.
Plus just the process of getting fully lubed up to get into a catsuit or other elaborate gear winds up getting it on the outside/hands/your surroundings. In my experience anyways
