Flippin thru a big stack of old furry comics i bought and this got my ass good
Anno is joking. He's buds with both Miyazaki and Tomino (Gundam) and knows that they didn't even really breakout until their late 30s/40s.
Anno himself was 35 when NGE came out.
Despite what you may have heard, Japanese people can be funny and sarcastic on purpose.

a print for a kind follower who asked if i had a copy of a print i made 14 years ago they could re-acquire from me. im not sure i have the print (i still need to go check the basement) but i asked if i could draw them a new one and they kindly allowed me to flex my muscles a little bit.
Lately my hand/wrist joints have been achey, have I finally developed the ability to predict the weather?
Nuciel & Bou [both he/him] "An odd pair of avian fae - traveling musicians with magical instruments, and a romantic couple on the side. They first meet Rivière while in human guise, and, sensing their potential, later act as warm if capricious guiding wings. Nuciel is energetic, theatrical, and knows almost everyone in the Faelands - especially Luna, much to her annoyance. Reliable and quiet Bou seems more content to go with the flow." The characters are a duo of very bird-like fae, with humanoid bodies but beaked avian heads, with talon-like hands, wings along their backs, hair, and long ears tufted with feathers. Both are musicians, holding instruments. Nuciel, on the right, is gangly and extravagant-yet-roguish in appearance, wearing striped pants and a big pink feather-adorned fedora. He holds a large, pink, bedazzled guitar. His feathers are white, his face and hands yellow. Bou is significantly larger and heftier, resembling a bearded vulture. Shaggy hair and a floppy cap cover his eyes. He also wears a large red striped scarf, a green jacket and baggy trousers - the latter two have some patches. He holds a yellow-and-brown accordion. There are small drawings to the side of each interacting with another character in the story. In one, Nuciel has a cheeky, intentionally condescending smile as he prods the cheek of Luna, in her wisp form, who is absolutely seething at him. In another, Bou lies down in the grass, while Riviére sits behind him and happily uses their magical paintbrush (shrunken down) to paint a flower crown onto his head.
Fen [she/her] "The headstrong, hot-headed princess of the Pixie Tribe, Fen would much rather be adventuring than following her matriarchal mother's footsteps. But when disaster befalls her tribe's forest home, she's forced to take action, allying with Rivière in the process. Despite her attitude far outsizing her body, she proves to be a loyal and honest friend." Fen is a small, furry pixie with wild red hair, long ears (with a notch in one), and large green wings with moth-like eye-spots. Her clothing is simple and woodsy, with a green scarf/cowl, a tan-and-green tunic-dress, large boots and bracelets made of a golden wood. She poses pridefully with a cocky grin, while other drawings show her pouting moodily, and being held back from furiously attacking an off-screen character by a very worried Rivière.
Estelle [she/her] [transfem] "The lustrous proprietress (and star performer) of the Moth's Flame, a hidden nightclub where she dazzles with her magical voice. Vibrant, nurturing and steadfast, she looks out for the downtrodden for whom her club is a haven. She takes a shine to Rivière, who finds they have much in common with her." Estelle is a sparkling moth-like faerie who resembles a classic female lounge singer from the Roaring 20's. Her skin is dark blue with several light blue, freckle-like spots, and she has a large, pale fluffy collar. Her legs and four arms are covered in the same pale fluff. She has large, pink, fluffy antennae that resemble feathers a vintage lounge songstress might wear - in most of the drawings they poke through her wide-brimmed hat, which is adorned with a pink, moth-shaped ribbon. She wears some shiny pink jewelry, and has a flowing, layered dress in a blue, dark-to-light gradient, covered in iridescent sparkles. In the largest drawing, she holds a fantastical sort of pink microphone, winking and snapping the fingers of one of her hands. Two other drawings depict her flirtatiously toying with the bangs of Luna (in her small wisp form), who looks uncharacteristically flustered, and letting Rivière try on her hat, to their delight, while one of her wings comfortingly wraps around them.
Batch #2 of #LumiknightRiviere characters so far #art #oc
Rivière Petit [they/she] [transfem non-binary] "A meek but gentle young painter from the French countryside. The night they turn thirteen, they transform and discover they're half-faerie, due to a pact their mother made with the Fae Queen - who takes her soul as payment. To earn the Queen's graces and save their mom, Rivière must become powerful and heroic enough to be a renowned Lumiknight... if such a scrawny, anxiety-filled teen even can." The character is a fae creature, with large pointed ears, a long fluffy tail, a pink nose, and pink butterfly-like wings (some of the time). They're a gangly young teen with messy short blue hair. They wear shabby but comfortable and cute pastel clothing, including a red flower-adorned knit beret, an oversized pastel blue cardigan, a red skirt, and a large white ribbon over their chest. They wield a large magical paintbrush, which in one drawing they're using to materialize a goldfish made of pink-and-blue paint that swims through the air. In other drawings, they wave at the viewer with a sheepish grin (displaying pink paw pads), nervously tug on their ribbon, clutch their beret to their chest with a melancholy expression, and sit frazzled and covered in paint as their brush sits atop their head after a flubbed maneuver.
Amelie Petit [she/her] "Rivière's worn but warm and wry single mother. Her seamstress skills keep the two of them afloat, but only barely. She and "Remy" both are village misfits, but mean the world to one another. However, her secret past with the fae haunts her, and when the Faerie Queen comes to claim Rivière as 'payment', Amelie takes their place." Amelie is a pale-skinned woman somewhere between her late 30's and early 40's, with short, dark bluish-grey hair tied up in a red cloth. She wears a pale green cardigan with flower accents on the sleeves, over a light green shirt and teal overalls with plaid patches - it's a vintage, handmade, working woman's look. Three other drawings depict her wearily rubbing her neck with her hair down, staring at something off-screen with wide-eyed dread, and hugging and heartily kissing her child Rivière, to their surprise (they are depicted as their closeted self, "Remy", a 12 year old boy with dark blue hair), while she playfully smushes a raggedy-looking plush goldfish against their cheek in a dual 'kiss'. Accompanying the goldfish toy is text: ""Soleil" was made by hand for Rivière when they were small."
Queen Nabotte [she/her] "The radiant Queen of the Faelands, descendant of the fabled Titania herself, beloved by her subjects - at least, those bestowed privilege by her. The "Low Fae" better know of the cruelty beneath her crystalline sheen. Her mysterious history with Rivière's mother Amelie is why Rivière is half-fae, but is also why Nabotte lays claim to Amelie herself for breaking their bargain. Becoming Lumiknight would let Rivière free their mother, but would also submit them to the Queen's command. Will it be worth it? And is it truly the only way...?" Nabotte is a faerie woman of the familiar elegant, winged humanoid variety - beautiful and sparkling, but with an unnerving air of sadism about her. She shines a sickly sweet grin at the viewer as she 'sits' in midair, one arm resting on one of her long, pink locks of hair as if it were an armrest, while her huge, shimmering, multicolored wings frame her like the back of a throne. Her arms and legs are covered in green-and-pink crystal, and her clothing is similarly crystalline. Two other drawings below show her coyly threatening a blue-haired half-faerie child, Rivière, who is frozen with wide-eyed horror as Nabotte lifts a sharp, red, elongated claw under their chin. The other drawing shows Nabotte clutching Rivière's mother, Amelie, by the top of her head, after having just frozen her in sparkling blue crystal. Nabotte's claws are elongated and glow at the tips, sinking into Amelie's crystal coating. Amelie's face is frozen in an expression of terror, while Nabotte strikes a coquettishly twisted smile at the viewer (presumably from Rivière's point of view).
Luna [she/her] "A feared, outcast fae sorceress, who lives as a hermit in a decrepit chateau amidst her various familiars. Bitter, shrewd and prideful, she nonetheless strikes a begrudging alliance with the lost young Rivière, helping them in exchange for help undoing a gradually worsening curse she suffers under. Her remaining power is centered in her lair, so she's forced to take on a smaller, weaker form when accompanying Rivière, to her chagrin." Luna is a tall, imposing inhuman and vaguely cat-like figure with greyish-blue skin, yellow eyes, spindly paw-padded hands, wild white hair, and four long ears that appear to grow out of her cloak's hood. Her cloak fades into a mysterious purple fog at the bottom. She wears various sorts of arcane-looking jewelry. In her hand, she conjures a purple serpent of flame. The art gives the impression of a sinister but haughty character. In one drawing, she chuckles menacingly, as if scheming, while Rivière awkwardly and uncertainly laughs along in the background. In another, she slumps against her wrist with a haggard, dramatically exhausted expression. She's depicted in some drawings in a much smaller, snakelike form herself, which she appears displeased about. In one drawing, she's nestled under Rivi's beret and is irritably pointing her tail towards one direction, while Rivi, pouting in disagreement, points in the opposite direction.
Trying this again without it being awkwardly attached to an unrelated post:
A handy thread of character profiles for my story #LumiknightRiviere, a fairy tale in postwar France about a trans teen who discovers they're half-faerie, and must rescue their mother from a spiteful Fae Queen. #art #oc
