Toilet roll holders filled with soil with parasol-shaped mushrooms growing inside and outside the tubes.
Toilet roll tubes filled with soil with tiny mushrooms growing on outside of tube.
Last week I sowed some broad beans in toilet roll tubes to get them started before planting out. The seeds have sprouted, but so have some tiny parasol-shaped mushrooms, both inside and outside the tubes. Any idea what species? #fungifriday #mushrooms

If you ever wondered whether it's possible to weave a basket from tomato stalks, the answer is yes.

A coral-like ceramic sculpture in the shape of a comet with a short tail. It is made of porcelain and is currently unfired. There are lots of textural and sculptural motifs, the tail is mostly made of fans, with the body of the comet covered in large rosette-like craters.
The piece has the look of a messy goldfish, somehow!
POLONIA-Coral Comet, work in progress.

A display of a well preserved bast object resembling a bucket, with a triangular handle and rough, decayed texture. The object is mounted upright in a glass case within a modern museum setting.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting the amazing Archaeological State Museum in Chemnitz. One of its many stunning objects is this Neolithic well bucket made of lime bast with a willow handle. Lime bast fibre is a flexible inner bark of a lime (linden) tree that was, for ...π§΅1/2

As promised, here are some nudibranchs I saw yesterday on the docks. The first one is Dendronotus venustus, the second and third are Hermissenda crassicornis and the last one, which I had to hang half off the dock to reach, is Coryphella verrucosa.

Screenshot of the beneficiary page for Women & Children First bookstore on Bookshop dot org. Tagline says, your local feminist bookstore since 1979! Along the top it says, $35,498,084.53 raised for local bookstores.
One of my new resolutions is to avoid buying print books from Amazonβso I finally set up an account on Bookshop.org, which benefits indie bookstores. I should have done this sooner. They had the book I wanted in stock and I was able to choose Women and Children First as beneficiary of the sale. Win!

A dividing budding yeast cell in steel, bronze, and silver, with apatite gemstones for the chromosomes. The sculpture rests in my hand, a physical cutaway view with many cellular structures visible.
Closeup of the sculpture, centered on the spindle pole body, a tiny structure looking like a stack of pancakes from the side, embedded in the long curved nuclear membrane, tethering the spindle (a splayed bundle of silver branches each terminating in a jewel chromosome). The spindle structure is polished silver, lodged in the polished bronze of the membranes and surrounded by bronze endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and other structures.
A favorite commission this year, a dividing cell with an extra detail. Colleagues of a retiring researcher commissioned me to add the specific structure she worked onβthe spindle pole bodyβto the sculpture. Here it is close up, in sterling silver embedded in the bronze nuclear membrane. π¬#SciArt

Tiny thrown and carved cup in dark brown clay, much narrower at the bottom than the top, carved with leaves somewhat resembling ferns, but improvised, that appear to wrap around the cup. Glazed in a deep blue glaze that was wiped off the raised areas of the carving before firing, revealing the brown clay.
Another improvised leaf wrap-around on a tiny cup. Could possibly be used as an egg cup, or shot glassβ¦. really a glaze test, but a lovely one, if I do say so myself.

Two bug like amphipods rest on either side of a cylindrical shaped radiolarian colony. The colony appears to be a series of 8 polka dot yellow spheres smushed into a line surrounded by a halo of blue dots representing a mucus layer.
A duo of amphipods have made this radiolarian their home. Radiolarians are part of the marine #plankton. Individual radiolarians are normally hundredths to tenths of millimeters in size, but some species amass into colonies like this one which may reach size of a whole centimeter! #marinelife π¦

paresthesia (face) 2016
An embroidery of the outline of a face in bone coloured thread on bone coloured linen. The forehead, cheeks, jaws, and temples are covered in filigree lines in dark blues, greens, and yellows. There are French knots spaced out along the lips. Lines of beige strands of thread are strung from the knots across the face in a geometric formation.
