I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

This is right. And people hate to hear it, but Joe Biden’s single most important task was to Trump-proof the US.

His task was to destroy the Republican Party to punish them for Trump, salt the earth over them, and implement big structural reforms to stop future R minority extremism.
And he failed.

Maybe it’s because I’m a colonial historian but so many of these white nation states seem to behave exactly like they did in the 19th century: ‘your leaders aren’t right for you,’ ‘we’re only killing you/colonizing you/installing puppet leaders for your own good’

I made a masala chai carrot cake for my partner’s birthday and I am nervous about how it turned out but not nervous enough that I resisted the impulse to modify the recipe even though I’ve never baked it before.

Guilt & shame are healthy emotions that help you course correct when you’ve run afoul of your values.
