Our #RaspberryShake seismographs in Mountain View and here at the Makakilo Observatory recorded this morning's 4.0 magnitude #earthquake south of Kauaʻi Island.
Greetings volcano fans. Episode 41 of the ongoing eruption of Kīlauea has started, and it's a big one.

Sunrise in Makakilo this morning
Looking like it might be approaching 300 m / 1000 ft. in height. Not much wind today so some tephra is falling near the closest camera (V3).

It looks like the fountaining portion of Episode 40 of Kīlauea's ongoing eruption may have just begun 🌋

Today's M7.6 #earthquake offshore of #Japan made a small tsunami there, ~20 cm or 7.4 in. We also recorded the earthquake across our #RaspberryShake stations in Hawaiʻi.

...meanwhile, all of our #RaspberryShake seismographs in Hawaiʻi recorded today's M7.0 #earthquake in southeastern Alaska. No tsunami hazard, BTW.
In case you're interested in the geography of the summit of Kīlauea Volcano, the USGS/HVO has an interactive map at this link. Under "Instruments" you can deselect everything but the cameras to see where they are.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the M7.7 earthquake that struck Hawaiʻi Island, also producing a deadly tsunami at the Halapē Campground. This article covers what we've learned about the geologic structure of the island and its earthquakes.

All three of our #RaspberryShake seismographs--Mountain View, the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo, and here at the Makakilo Observatory--recorded tonight's 4.6 magnitude #earthquake underneath Kīlauea #Volcano.
Hilo's Pacific Tsunami Museum will be hosting a series of special events to remember the events of that day 50 years ago; learn more here: tsunami.org/events/
Fifty years ago this month, the largest Hawaii earthquake of the 20th and 21st centuries occurred. Earthquake shaking, as well as ground subsidence and local tsunami, contributed to a catastrophic sequence of events on November 29, 1975.

Comic. [two connected spacecraft hovering in space above the Earth] Houston, the view is superb. We can see the continents spread out below us, right where they’ve been since the Earth formed. [caption] I still can’t believe we developed spaceflight before we figured out that the continents moved.
