She used Google Translate, of course, writing short sentences in English. She did not use the voice app or translate from Portuguese. She messaged me to ask what will happen when they need to speak with the caseworker.
A family member (by chance, a translator) is at the social security services this morning in Portugal. An elderly Chinese couple entered the offices. They do not speak Portuguese or English, and asked for her help.
This is yet another story of how migrants try daily to navigate linguistically and culturally discordant settings, and how technology—most importantly, the members of the host community—can make a difference.
The 2nd article in our special issue of Translation Spaces on the question 'Is MT Translation?' has been published. Brian Mossop: Do machines and humans translate in the same sense? Check it out!

Thrilled to have been the opponent for Dr Bennett’s PhD defense! Her study on agents in the translation process of the Portuguese Journal of Cardiology offers insights into translators’ roles in academical medical contexts. Honored to engage in such inspiring discussions. Congratulations! 🎓✨

After a rough few weeks, it is lovely to be in Antwerp: loving the Antwerp accent, all the kriek options, and conversations about translation and interpreting. But seriously, what’s with all the Nijntje merch? Can we get more of that in Leiden, please?
Just popped in to see if #EST or #Leeds was trending 👀—and guess what? Thrilled to share that I'll be presenting at the 11th EST Congress on the Global Visions, Local Voices panel! Excited to discuss two projects that mean the world to me. 🌍💬 #TranslationStudies #EST2025

A good but shocking read for this morning.
White travel mug with black lid, handle, and bottom sitting on a table. The black text on the cup reads Remeber to close all parentheses. We're not paying to air conditon the rest of the paragraph.
