Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831–1895) was the first African American woman doctor in the United States. After the American Civil War (1861-1865), Crumpler was employed in Richmond, Virginia with “other black physicians caring for freed slaves who would otherwise have had no access to medical care. She worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau, and missionary and community groups, even though black physicians experienced intense racism working in the postwar South. Encouraged by local physicians, she entered the New England Female Medical College in 1860, graduating in 1864 as the first Black woman in the nation to receive a medical degree. Returning to Boston in the late 1860s, Crumpler opened a practice in the Beacon Hill neighborhood, and in 1883, she published A Book of Medical Discourses, on addressing the health and welfare of infants and women, making her one of the first female physician authors in the 19th century. Her former home on Joy Street is part of the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail, and her headstone was finally installed in 2020 after a community fundraising effort. March 30 is recognized in Virginia as “Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler Day.”
