That kind of sucks, but I still have the important things (the XML files and I think most of the cleaned scans) so it's fine. I really should look at a comprehensive data backup strategy.
It will be nice to finish up what I have. On that note, I also lost almost all my raw scans and old data! I thought I had it on my Windows PC (I am sure I did at some point) and it was all backed up to Amazon Drive, but when I went to pull everything down since it EOL'd, I am missing a whole bunch.
I'm going through and fixing errors after changing from Java 7 to 23 (big jump there!) but more importantly, it's really fun translating a bit of stuff again. I'll run out of things I scanned pretty soon, and don't have the time to find something and scan it in.
My Java/Swing program didn't run there - probably due to how I packaged it. So for the past few years I haven't been doing any translation. I tried a coding Agent, and it really quickly got my package building and running on my work machine. Nice! It's kind of fun looking at this old code base.
Screenshot of Great Manga Application Onidzuka, a program I wrote for translating manga.
Back in 2000 I started writing a program to translate manga. It just lets you draw text areas and it fits text in them that you add, but it was a fun way to program Java/Swing and do daily translation. Maybe 3 or 4 years ago my Mac at work was upgraded to an Apple Silicon chip.

Yeah, keeping those paper records is great. About 10 years ago I started paying by credit card, and the past 2 or 3 years via bank transfer. No official paper record for that, and I can't get credit card records further back than a year!
I hope so. If I don't get it this time, no big deal, but I'm starting to get old enough that I want to make sure if anything happens to my wife that I will be able to stay in the country with my kids for them. It would be horrible to have to uproot their entire lives just because of my Visa status.
All this stuff is annoying, and a reasonable amount of work, but not too bad. Hopefully I'll get permanent residence, but if not, with the more conservative government here now, and all that is going on in the US, I can't really complain. Better dealing with the JP gov't than ICE. Fuck them.
and bank records from 2-4 years ago. I have all those, and the original residence tax slips with my hand notes on when I paid them. I hope all that is enough. Good thing I have a reasonable filing system (I'm actually starting to run out of space after 20 years of JP and US tax returns). Anyway.
I think I have everything they want. The most annoying thing is that they want proof of payment of WHEN I paid my residence tax - the tax office issued paperwork saying I paid all the years they are interested in, but they want to know WHEN. Which means I need to dive into credit card records,
A year and a half ago, I applied for Permanent Residence status in Japan. I should have done it 10 years ago. Last week I heard back from the immigration office: they want more paperwork. One tax office, one 区役所, lots of discussion with my work insurance provider, and My Number Portal dives later,
