ftr, nobody should be overly concerned about this atm, we came DAAAAAMN close to the GOP having the actual numbers in the state legislatures in the early 00s for them to be able to do this willy-nilly (iirc, they only lacked like 3 or 4 state legislative chambers??) but the threat is mostly past us.

Cretaceous illustration for James Stryker's paleoart project featuring Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops along with cameos from Ankylosaurus and Borealosuchus.

A small rocky stream flowing down from the mountains at sunset and bordered by forest with various animals staring one another down. On the left is an Ankylosaurus noticing and being noticed by a Borealosuchus half submerged in the water below a small cascade. On the right is a herd of Triceratops of mixed ages approaching the stream noticing and being noticed by a Tyrannosaurus family on the other bank. Each group has two adults and a juvenile. The juvenile Tyrannosaurus is based primarily on the proportions of juvenile Tarbosaurus to avoid confusion with Nanotyrannus. There are various birds in the sky flying off both sides of the frame symbolizing that they will make it out of the Cretaceous as the last surviving lineage of dinosaurs.

Watched the final episode of The Dinosaurs tonight. The extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs is always bittersweet. They handled it quite poetically, and of course I'm crying. It helps to be reminded that we live alongside dinosaurs to this day: avian dinosaurs. I love birds.

Episode 3 of The Dinosaurs watched. I've gotta say that it's still incredibly fun and surprising in some spots. My partner was yelling out during the bird versus pterosaur scene asking if that really happened lol. Love how clear they're making it that birds are dinosaurs too.

Alright 2nd episode of The Dinosaurs watched. Still very fun and having a great time. They're showing really cool behaviors and speculative features, love the emphasis on dinosaur evolution including feathers. There's some nitpicks I have, but they're easy to overlook.

So those are brief thoughts. The Dinosaurs is a technically impressive, fun show that I enjoyed watching. It suffers from its narration and narrative style, and from the looks and behaviours of certain of its animal models. But they are outweighed by the good, and I do recommend it overall. 8/8

And, yes, crocodiles, a modern group of animals that didn’t exist in the Mesozoic. I wish that TV people would resist the urge to use living crocodylian species as stand-ins for Mesozoic ones, but good luck with that... 7/8

Still from a nat hist doc where fruit bats dunk themselves in water but risk getting grabbed by waiting freshwater crocodiles.

... criminal work (superman Anchiornis, T. rex lugging tons of carrion to a nest site) but also derivative work: the sequence with pterosaurs getting grabbed by crocodiles is a lift from a nat hist doc with fruit bats and freshies (there were plans to do the same thing in Prehistoric Planet)... 6/8

Finding new, but technically 'acceptable', behavioural sequences is part of the challenge for shows like this. The Dinosaurs is a mixed bag on this, variously including strong work (singing and swimming ankylosaurs and bait-feeding heronesque Spinosaurus)… 5/8

A Cretaceous ankylosaur, head lifted, singing in a fynbos-like habitat and bright sunlight.

Having said that, some of the inaccurate models are great. The dragonesque Allosaurus is a no in terms of accuracy but still looks great and I loved that sequence. I really enjoyed the terrifying Hatzegopteryx, Ankylosaurus in the rain, the singing Peloroplites, and the β€˜snow king’ Yutyrannus. 4/8

I say β€˜surprisingly’ enjoyable because I disliked LOOP so much that I never finished it. Like LOOP, the narration is fixated on heroic and dramatic hyperbole, but I guess that’s the Hollywoodized slant they were going for. Some of the CG models are terribly ugly, with really nasty inaccuracies. 3/8

That in mind, The Dinosaurs is surprisingly enjoyable and really good at giving us a potted history of the course of the Mesozoic. Overall, I liked it and think it had some outstanding content. Congrats to those involved... 2/8

Last night I watched all 4 eps of the new Netflix series The Dinosaurs. I tend not to comment on these kinds of shows as, having worked on them, I find that those people who criticize or critique them have no understanding of the competing pressures and factors inherent to the TV industry... 1/8

A purely hypothetical scene for the 8th episode of "The Amazing Digital Circus".

1st panel: Caine, mad with envy and desperation, glitches in the middle of a darkened room while saying "You know I love you" as he stretches his hand out to touch Pomni (second panel). A blue screen of death blares in the background.

2nd panel: Pomni, protecting her friends (background), stands defiantly against Caine. She glares at him as he reaches his hand out to touch her. Behind her, Kinger looks on with fear for her. Further back, Jax glares at Caine with tears in his eyes, Ragatha stands paralyzed with her hands clutching her shoulders, and Zooble glaring intensely while Gangle cowers next to them.

Tricky choice. I'd go with one of three picks:

1. Burgess Shale 508MYA (if the camera is waterproof, I'd love to film some Cambrian marine life.)

2. Hell Creek 67 MYA (wanna see a live T.rex or Triceratops)

3. Rancho La Brea 40-30KYA (catch ice age megafauna and maybe a tar pit trap in action.)

Hatred, ignorance, fear, greed, and discrimination are viruses, magnified by suffering, carried in buckets, spilled onto the world.

We cannot eliminate them by actions that magnify hatred, ignorance, fear, greed, discrimination and suffering - only by actions that relieve them.
