AMS update: The role of the AMS Executive Director has changed somewhat since the start of the present ED’s tenure (beginning on 28 October 2019, as interim). Some of this is to be expected. However, the recent elevation of the ED from ex officio 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 to ex officio 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳 of the Board—thus granting the ED access to a seat on the Executive Committee, which is utilized for urgent operation of the Society—is of particular interest in our current crisis. What constitutes an urgency/emergency, and who determines this? What about long-term urgent conditions, such as a pandemic or the death of a previous ED? Most importantly, what happens to checks and balances when the ED, an appointed (not elected) administrative employee, is granted special authority indefinitely? Two new documents (linked below) on the Accountability Archive site delineate some important recent changes. What are you suggesting people wait to do? The petition demands transparency, communication, & investigation. Won’t the full details you mention come out with that? The petition raises numerous concerns, & it seems like meeting its demands will be good for ALL (office, board, council, & membership).
