On the campus where I work, I'd say the folks using generative AI most noticeably are young early career scientists (I work mostly with engineers). Many of the grant applications drafts I see are *brutal* - just littered with ChatGPTs vacuous doublespeak.
"THE TRUTH WE CAN'T TELL EACH OTHER IS THAT GRIEF IS A MUTATION. WHEN YOU LOSE SOMEONE, YOU WILL BEAR THIS WOUND FOREVER. YOU WILL BE MOURNING UNTIL THE END OF YOUR DAYS. IT CHANGES YOUR STATE OF BEING IN THE WORLD." - JULIA DUCOURNAU -
I know a lot of you think editing a horror magazine is all fun and games, but sometimes youโll just be proofreading an article by a top-notch interviewer like @isaacfeldberg.bsky.social and get smacked in the face with a quote that will stay with you forever.
Hi #EarlyModern Bluesky - did you know that someone brilliant has built working printing presses using Lego and they are trying to get enough supporters so that Lego will release it as a kit?
They look so cool!

That little โCan you spot the AI writing?โ quiz in the NYT is not a challenge. It is manufactured consent. They are trying to build a case. โSee? 65% of people like AI better.โ Or โ40% canโt tell the difference.โ
They want a number to help convince you that art has no value. Donโt give it to them.
I didnโt have to use ChatGPT to know it tells you that youโre right even when youโre wrong. Iโve talked to people about their LLM usage, read reporting and studies about it, and seen what people have shared online. The idea that you HAVE to use something yourself to critique it is not always true

In a world in flames, archives might seem inconsequential, yet they represent our collective memory, and their erasure also is a political act.

Gonna be a big โpeople who donโt do politics finding out the politics still do themโ week.
But you cannot draw the masses into politics without drawing in the women as well. For under capitalism the female half of the human race is doubly oppressed.
you know where it's at! โ
jfc - what do we even do with this? I'm utterly and wholly at a loss... what the ever living fuck.

Tehran has merely challenged Israelโs dominance in the region, not its survival. Yet the claim that Iran existentially threatens the Jewish state is rarely disputed in mainstream American debate, even by politicians who oppose war, @peterbeinart.bsky.social writes.

For the Calgarians in the crowd: water restrictions start tomorrow.
"If there is a woman oppressed by colonialism, we cannot achieve feminism goals."
Protesters in South Korea's capital, Seoul, rallied in solidarity with Palestinian and Iranian women on International Womenโs Day, marching toward the US Embassy.
Iran has so far engaged in an ethical war, observing principles of proportionality.
The US & Israeli bombing of a water desalination plant in Iran is a war crime.
It is a violation of the Geneva convention because they are essential for civilian survival. It is also devastating for the region.
"Every dollar directed toward normalizing AI art generation is a dollar that didnโt go toward a muralist, a poet, a filmmaker, a ceramicist... Every institutional stamp of approval on this technology makes the next round of cuts to human artists that much easier to justify."

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
Me too! Loved that old room upstairs when it still had wooden floors. Thanks for the reminder tonight.
This is a fave of mine - thanks for the reminder. Might throw on 'How We Operate' now lol youtu.be/fKJJRnuCwF4?...
Love this band. And I caught them a handful of times when they came through town too. So great live.

A pattern made of line drawings of vintage radios.
I'm happy to share a new project โย The Golden Age of Community Radio. It's a directory of awe-inspiring stations across the world that I discovered while promoting an album last year. It's also a resource for other musicians wanting to find new places to send their music. radio.surfacepressure.net
