Me, inside an iron lung
"Do you know what it's like to be inside an iron lung? I do."
I redesigned the science communications page on my website in a somewhat... unique way, you might say. I also wrote a little essay about my experience inside an iron lung.

What even are โultra-processedโ foods? Hereโs a workable definition.
In a recent Nature Medicine article, Roberto and two co-authors proposed a different approach: Instead of trying to define what qualifies as ultra-processed, define what does not qualify.
lmao this is not a "workable definition" of ultra-processed foods, it's just rewording the problem

Yes because teenagers famously hate unsweet flavors like...cinnamon.
โRobert F. Kennedy Jr., the secretary of health and human services, is having rotator cuff surgery on Tuesdayโฆ
The department did not immediately respond to a query as to whether Mr. Kennedyโs injury was caused by the intense workouts he has promoted since taking the helm of the agency.โ

โAnd just as worries about the health impacts have grown, so have the number of new youth centers and community projects in the Indigenous communities, each of them branded with an oil company sponsorship.โ
โHundreds of members of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation work in the oil sands, commuting from Fort Chipewyan for weeklong shifts or moving to the burgeoning neighborhoods near the operations, where they earn salaries multiple times that of any job available in their hamlet.โ
โIndigenous leaders like Chief Adam are in a challenging position. On one hand, they are the drivers behind efforts to protect their land and health. They have filed lawsuits and traveled to Ottawa to protest... But these same leaders are balancing the realities of a complex economic relationshipโ
โOil companies are legally responsible for cleaning up their tailings and restoring the landscape, but even after more than 50 years of mining, those efforts have hardly begun here. There is little pressure from the province of Alberta โ sometimes called the Texas of Canadaโ
โAfter years of pleas, the Canadian government finally announced in August 2024 that it would commission a 10-year study to examine the health impacts of the oil sands on Fort Chipewyan. But the work has not begun, and it has not specified a methodology or suggested any interventionsโ
โAnd for other biliary tract cancers, the rate was 13 times what was expected.
But then came the familiar disclaimer: โThe small population size of the Fort Chipewyan community limits the ability to interpret results.โ
โOver three decades, the rate of non-Hodgkinโs lymphoma had been more than two and a half times what would be expected for the hamlet. Cervical cancer had occurred at four times the expected rate. The rate of a rare bile duct cancer in men had been more than nine times the expectationโ
โLast year, a letter from Albertaโs chief medical office of health to Allan Adam, the chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, acknowledged that โthe rates of all cancers combined in the Fort Chipewyan area were statistically significantly higher than those in the rest of Alberta.โ
โBut scientists say there are no safe levels of exposure to some carcinogenic components โ and no proven methods for fully eliminating them.
Environmental experts are worried about implications well beyond Fort Chipewyanโ
โNow, the Canadian government is weighing regulations that could allow the companies to release the oil sands wastewater directly into the river system, so long as they first use filtration systems, microorganisms or other methods to reduce contaminants to safe levels.โ
โMassive pools of toxic waste with known carcinogens โ their collective volumes estimated at more than half a million Olympic-size swimming pools โ sit near the riverโฆ As oil-company operations have increased, so have bouts of unexplained illness among residents of Fort Chipewyan.โ

A new Wall Street Journal investigation finds DHS is increasingly turning its wrath on U.S. citizens, punishing them for simply filming or observing officers.

โHe also said that coffee flavors could have the same allure.
โHow do you operationalize what is a coffee flavor versus mocha Frappuccino flavor?โ he said.โ
โAdam Leventhal, a University of Southern California public health scientist, said the effects of the new policy would be hard to predict. He noted that the F.D.A. said it would be open to mint flavors in the new guidance, which he and colleagues found to be highly appealing to young people.โ
โThe agencyโs new direction for vaping dovetails with the moves at the White House to shore up support among voters, including adults who vape, as it heads into the midterm elections. Those voters tend to dislike curbs or regulations that limit their choices on many things, including e-cigarettes.โ
โThe new approach did not please public health groups who reviewed the policyโฆ โAllowing any flavors on the market benefits only corporations and harms public health,โ said Kelsey Romeo-Stuppy. โThat is not a gamble we should be willing to take.โ @profgoldberg.bsky.social
โThe Trump White House views vaping as an election issue, with many MAGA voters embracing e-cigarettes and President Trump having promised during the campaign season to โsave vaping again.โ It is unclear if the new policy would please prospective votersโ
โThe agency said in a document released on Monday that it would consider vapes in flavors such as mint, coffees, teas and spices, possibly like clove or cinnamon. The F.D.A. said it would continue to reject those offering sweet or fruity flavors that are more appealing to teenagers.โ
โPatriotism, โThe American Revolutionโ argues by example, is not about hiding the stains of the past behind pretty oil paintings. It means loving your country enough to tell its whole story. Once upon a time, that mission might have seemed middlebrow and dull. Todayโฆ it is positively revolutionary.โ

An hour apart. Perhaps we should stop treating the mindless weathervane spinning in the breeze as if it has a clear strategic direction we can ascertain.
โI think thereโs more thinking to be done about what inequities we have addressed w:this policy, &what inequities might be actually getting a little bit worse w/a policy of this nature that inherently prioritizes people who had consistent access to care or had lab values in the last couple of yearsโ
