Lately, beyond teaching online, I've been destroying toys and spray painting everything... also known as "crafting"? π€π¦πΏ #ArtsAndCrafts #Unicorns

"Memory" makes up just 8 pages of How People Learn II, or 2% of the total volume, and yet some in the #EduCogSci crowd think that 2% represents the sum total of how we should think about teaching, learning, and schooling. π€·

As the teaching gig quiets down, my new passion of crafting weird things is ramping up... I've been "destroying" toys, spray painting things, and generally creating items I would want to wear and use. π π π€ #DistractionFromEverything

βIf you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.β
A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.
A federal judge ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing it to proceed with mass terminations of probationary federal workers. The administration has already dismissed 6,700 employees from the IRS, with plans to lay off an additional 50,000 workers from the Defense Department next.

There's a more recent WAPO article but it's pay per view and I didn't want to frustrate the readers.

I want women, minorities, and poor white people in the US to know that our system of human economic organization was never built for you, it was built against you. You owe nothing to a racist, classist patriarchy that funds warlords and billionaires while keeping you poor, powerless, and obedient.

βTerrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.β

If itβs not important enough for a teacher to read it, why would it be important enough for a student to write it?
I know I'm fighting years of them being told that GRADES matter the most... so when I squeak about #learning and use #ungrading methods, I'm up against a giant. They will do anything FOR THE GRADE, and I sometimes don't blame them.
Also, the infiltration of #AI was evident to me the most during my HUM 101 #Intersession course. Usually, students write reflections w/3-5 sentences + errors. Now, I'm getting those kinds of reflections AND ones that are very long w/intriguing vocabulary + no errors. I feel all I can do is shrug.
I don't like to gripe about #ungrading, or students in general, but it does bug me when I take late work and they want it assessed immediately. Like, um, you completed this when it worked for you, and I will do the same. #Patience goes both ways.
We should have some unprecedented events that are good for once
Based on a wonderful suggestion from @jaustinedu.bsky.social, I've created a rough Starter Pack for those involved with #ungrading & alternative #assessment.
If I forgot someone (I'm sure I have!), please forgive me & let me know if you want to be added to the list. Thanks!
