Arvo Pärt: Annum per annum | Robert Pecksmith YouTube video by Stefan Schwarz

In honour of Arvo Pärt’s 90th birthday yesterday, here is my video of Dr Robert Pecksmith (Buckfast Abbey) playing Pärt's haunting and monumental “Annum per annum” on the Schuke organ of Fürstenwalde Cathedral (Germany). www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb78... #ArvoPärt #ClassicalMusic #OrganMusic

Yes, I'm familiar with the old Stuttgart recording. The Dortmund version was slightly different at key moments (e.g. the final tableau of Act II or the killing of Siegfried in Act III), and I found these revisions to be very effective. Dortmund also had a much better Brünnhilde and Gunther.

(3/3) Hopefully this won’t be the last time this production is staged, whether in Dortmund or elsewhere. A Blu-ray video release would be more than welcome to preserve this extraordinary achievement for posterity. #RingCycle #RichardWagner

(2/3) What set it apart was the bold, intelligent use of humour. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much during a Ring Cycle. It made the eventual descent into tragedy all the more effective. I particularly enjoyed the recurring appearances of Gutrune's wedding cake and the man in the bear costume…

Curtain call after the premiere of Wagner's "Götterdämmerung"

Curtain call after the premiere of Wagner's "Götterdämmerung"

(1/3) After four separate trips to Dortmund, I’ve now seen the complete Ring Cycle at @theaterdortmund.bsky.social. A remarkable achievement. The quality was excellent throughout, thanks above all to Peter Konwitschny’s masterful staging, which ranks right up there with Chéreau’s Centennial Ring.
