A joint statement from the North East Green Party Regional Equality, Diversity and Inclusion group and North East Young Greens: We are appalled at the way the Labour Government has conducted itself concerning the Welfare reform Bill. At a time when there is already deep class division, the Welfare Bill the UK Government have proposed would subdivide another group of people: the have and have-nots of disabled people.

Some will still be in receipt of Personal Independence Payments (PIP), but future claimants will have no support from Government's PIP scheme or get the health element of Universal Credit. Let us make this loud and clear: PIP is not an out of work benefit. PIP actually helps a lot of disabled people to access work and suitable housing. As Greens, we will continue to fight and advocate for sick and disabled people now, and those in the future.

Despite this ruling trans people are re still protected under legislation for gender identity and also the perception of other characteristics. In the same way a straight person is protected against homophobia from people who think they are gay.
