I hate it too. It's the same mess here, with EU having debated on and off about it since 2018, but we keep doing it anyway. Ugggh π«
I'm playing playing through the OG right now! I had it on GameCube but never went past the first village. I can see the appeal, but let me tell you, it has aged quite a bit, and it's hard not to laugh at dialogues now, it's so cheesy π
Thank you for the TLDR. I noticed the typical noise around drama, but had a feeling I didn't want to dig into it too much.
Congrats!! β
It really feels like the worst of both worlds. The unreliability and user maintenance associated with PCs, without the simplicity and cheaper prices of consoles. Why would I ever want that?
It's really about the first-party games, SE should stay out of any change... hopefully. Cause that would be quite the dumb move indeed.
It's never been easier to play FFXIV on Linux, all you have to do is to follow carefully the 3 steps:
1. Install XIVLauncher (flatpak is the easiest, but if your distro has another preferred way of installing stuff, that's fine too)
2. Play
3. There is no step 3.
*Hugs and warming moments spent together, chatting and laughing as they get some comfort food too*
I'm not strict about the plugins they should mainline. I just want them to read the room and take notes. Every popular plugin is basically something players felt was lacking from the game enough that someone decided to address it themselves.
Make Ktisis and BDTH irrelevant by implementing their features officially into the client for everyone, including console players.
It's always a good time with you~
hey guys.

My opinion is that the EN localization team tends to have a heavy hand on private jokes and memes, and often go further than just adapting humor to a local and cultural context. The more you rewrite text with good intentions, the higher the chances of getting carried away.
But I wish more people realized it's not a case of "bad translation". It's deliberate, it's because a history of terribly localized games through the 90s led to these decisions, and it produces some really odd moments in the English script, but all with good intentions.
I always play SE games with English VO, because it usually gets the highest budget and top-notch voice actors; but French text, because it's consistently closer to source material. It takes some time for your brain to adapt though, because what you hear and what you read are 2 very different things!
French translator JΓ©rΓ©mie Kermarrec has written a long, detailed explanation about this whole process, and I wish an English version was made available, ironically... The most impacted people need to understand more about all this.
This is the reason why the English is always the most wildly different from Japanese; it's entirely rewritten by non-translators, whose job is to "make it sound as if the game was designed and written by native English people".This creates regularly major differences and even entirely made-up stuff.
So, it's the result of a global decision at Square Enix, not specific to FFXIV. English localizations there, and only English ones, have an added pass after translation and proof-reading called "editorializing", while the other languages keep it at that.
Let's do something about that, shall we? Honestly cool OC, and while I'm not close friend OOC they seem a very nice person. Go check them out!
I can give you one of mine so we've got the same, what do you say? π
She deserves the happiness (and so do you!)
Non, pas RPS... Pas toi, pas après tout ce que tu as fait !
Me replaying literally any BioWare game
It goes without saying, but I'm obviously not on a vibe coded, FFXIV Tinder app. Or on Tinder, anyway. I barely do any RP anymore these days, and I would restrict my online presence at the lowest minimum if I could. So, if you see me there, that's not me.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I've learned about it last year and it still could be found easily, but it's a bit harder now.
