Organizers are calling the State of the Swamp event βThe Rebuttal to the State of the Union,β with the Portland Frog Brigade tweaking that to βThe Ribbital.β
The Brazilian political system is, structurally, very similar to the American one. But when they elected a Trump-style authoritarian back in 2018, their Congress and Supreme Court actually fought back.
I went to Brazil to find out why. And what I learned surprised me.

I'm super excited to share that this article was published today in Science! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
All made possible by the fantastic group of donors, volunteers and scientists at The American Chestnut Foundation (tacf.org), HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, and our collaborators.
Just so depressing to me that the country is run by people that donβt respect science across all the disciplines
In the absence of real oversight, we will continue to bear the costs of an administration that privileges ideology over evidence: increased risk of disease, narrowing scope for discovery and innovation, and reduced economic activity.
Grievance has its consequences.

This is why Democrats need to compete EVERYWHERE.
We wonβt win every race, but itβs stupid and irresponsible to simply forfeit certain races to incumbents. Always but especially now, we need competitive elections. And at the bare minimum, make them spend money defending seats they had won by 17 pts
Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti βWe are heartbroken but also very angry. Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the βheroβ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trumpβs murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.

This position is still open. The Weisberg lab is recruiting a postdoc or Ph.D. student to study horizontal gene transfer in plant-associated microbial communities. Please see the job ad for more information and feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
AOC: I want everybody to understand that the cuts to your health care are whatβs paying for this. You get screwed over to pay a bunch of thugs in the street that are shooting mothers in the face.
It breaks our hearts to have to say that CDC is no longer a source for evidence-based vaccine recommendations. π

Don't forget folks: allowing yourself a vision of the future you'd want for our country and planet - not the one you'd settle for, not the one you fear, but the future of your dreams - isn't naive, it's a vital cognitive skill. That's how we articulate what we most value. What's worth fighting for.

When people argue that renewable energy sources are too expensive, remember that we donβt invade countries to seize wind farms and there are no solar cartels. Fossil fuels have enormous geopolitical, public health, and climate externalities.
