I forget how he phrased it, but Marc Maron had a joke about the left annoying the average American into fascism. Transgressing against someone who annoys you can probably seem like fun & games.

The idea that the fascist right has secret knowledge, however, is just stupid.

Oh, yup. Tom Raper was big business in Richmond. They named the street after him.

Is Biden not still old? They could write a couple dozen more stories about that instead.

Good read.

"When weapons no longer decide the fate of battles but the survival of civilization itself, people who view these contests through strictly military means may not be competent to make decisions about national β€” or civilizational β€” survival."

While I felt this way about my own political science studies, I wouldn't presume to project my experience onto more diligent students.

"Going to class" and "drinking fewer beers" might, theoretically, improve one's grasp of the subject matter.

Unfortunately we're not in the Weird Al episode where his album only went gold and he had to settle for the smaller hot tub.

Feels little like speed running your way to having that legacy code that held together with spit & bailing wire. There's the one guy who has been here for 40 years who kind of understands it. Only now you don't have that guy. The hedge fund that owns the AI company will rent him out for a steep fee.

"Our medical system is an octopus riding a donkey riding a skateboard into a sadness quarry."

(Not sure where I got that quote, but it showed up in my memories today.)

Wil Wheaton posted to his blog and I only just now got to reading it, (because…. waves at the general state of the world).

You might also really enjoy and appreciate his β€œstory behind the story” of this photo:

Well, that made me tear up a little bit unexpectedly. Maybe I felt the same way as a kid, didn't realize it, and Wil helped me understand.

Thanks for sharing!

I would play this game. Please release it on the PS4. I have not upgraded hardware in a while.

On the drive down to Bloomington to watch the men's game, we were listening to the women's game on the radio. At halftime, we were wondering why we were doing this to ourselves. Glad we stayed tuned in!

The ad copy practically writes itself.

REAL MEN USE NOHOMO TACTICAL DILDOS. THEY'RE EXTREME, BROTHER!

From there, a slightly altered version of the Terrafirmanator commercial:
"It's the most ruthless, five-hundred-horsepower, ass-dominating piece of hardware the world has ever seen!"

Read a Civil War history book that had a few paragraphs on antebellum drinking patterns. It's like Tennyson said, "we are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven."

for those of you who werent adults during iraq, its hard to overstate how much the media loves war porn. they salivate over pentagon spin briefings. they love stories about all the bombs and how supposedly infallible they are. they love the notion of the commander in chief, in the situation room etc

Is it any more complicated than simple racism and sexism? Texas Republicans figure that, statewide, fewer Texans will vote for a black woman than a white man?

I wouldn't admire them for that calculus; but I wouldn't call it irrational.

The cut was off in the package of mini-submarine buns I've been using for my lunch this week. Instead of the cut being 25% or 50% of the way into the bun - or whatever is normal - it's like 5% up from the bottom.

Which is just not a structurally sound base for my sandwich artistry.

This dude's focus combined with the reporter's desire to avoid anything substantive and just fill time with meaningless fluff makes for a great dance.

>>people will not trust you when you need them to in the future.<<

Is this true? I'd like it to be true. But I look around and see plenty of people trusting some of the most flagrant liars around while distrusting people who are pretty honest.

Pluralistic: 30 Sep 2021 – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

Cory Doctorow has had a lot to say about "criti-hype" - criticism that serves as hype for the thing being criticized.

For example, when critics characterize Facebook as having evil mind-controlling algorithms, advertisers can conclude they are getting their money's worth.

I noticed that one too. I've been to Niagara Falls and that metric was still unhelpful to me.
