JFK created the USAID in Nov. 1961. Click on photo for some what what he said about it.
"There is no escaping our obligations: our moral obligations as a wise leader and good neighbor in the interdependent community of free nations – our economic obligations as the wealthiest people in a world of largely poor people, as a nation no longer dependent upon the loans from abroad that once helped us develop our own economy – and our political obligations as the single largest counter to the adversaries of freedom." – John F. Kennedy
January 20, 1961, major snow storm the day before and temperatures in the low 20s.
One of the big names from the 2017 Unite the Right rally, Augustus Invictus, is (finally!) going to prison for his role in the tiki torch parade. He was convicted of using fire for racial intimidation.
When you are writing a book about the Kennedy assassination (no, I don’t deal with conspiracy theories), I guess any new attention to the topic is advantageous? And, no, I don’t believe the CIA killed JFK or RFK, as RFK’s problematic son seems to.
Agree about LOC cafeteria, which I have visited for years -- can't beat the view, though. I have my students watch the first two hours of network coverage (available on David Von Pein's JFK YouTube channel). They are always fascinated.
I found that CBS booklet today in the Frank Stanton Papers!
So: FIRST POST! I'm here in DC doing research at my happy place, the Library of Congress, for my long delayed, forever-in-progress book on TV news coverage of JFK's assassination. The project feels newly relevant to our moment.
