Eventually I stopped asking "What's the purpose of life?" and realized "Life is beautiful, why does it have to have any purpose beyond that?". I left religion altogether, embraced the beauty of objective reality and, more than a decade after I wrote the first lines, I finished this song.
I continued in the church for years, afraid of facing the unknown of a life outside. The more the cracks spread, the more at peace I felt with that unknown. I continued to work on this song throughout this journey.
The long journey this song has taken: I started writing this song in 2003 when I was a mormon missionary in Detroit. I was in my second year of missionary service and I had come to the realization that I didn't believe what I was teaching.
