A lot of the people Akbar writes about in this are staking their careers on the hope that no one remembers the work they did to abet a genocide. Akbar's book is a vital part of the effort to ensure that no one forgets.

News from Iran & Lebanon increasingly resembles years of bloodshed in Gazaβ€”civilian areas pummeled, international law ignored & a spiral of war endangering millions. Understanding why means understanding the US-Israel dynamic in one key period: under President Joe Biden, after October 7, 2023

Progressive purity test?
Democratic candidates for Utah's new, blue 1st Congressional District participated in a town hall on Monday where they unanimously:
Accused Israel of genocide
Endorsed transgender treatments for minors
Called for abolishing ICE

Why are reporters surprised that a Democratic congressional district is producing candidates who agree with the Democratic primary electorate's consensus on these issues?

This is no different from Putin saying MH17 was shot down by Ukraine or Assad saying rebels gassed themselves.

Elizabeth Warren: "I am a hard no on a supplemental. This is not a war the American people want us to engage in. This is not a war that makes us safer ... No. No more money. The only thing Congress has the power to do is to stop actions like this through the power of the purse."

The stupidest people on earth entered into highly technical negotiations, misunderstood everything, and then decided to launch a murderous war and cause a global crisis rather than ask a single question.

Never let it be said that feminist IR theorists are overstating their case.

Question from someone ignorant about how the SPR functions: how does the world’s largest oil producer not quickly restore its SPR after spending it down?

Wars of choice murder countless people todayβ€”and drown the homes of countless people tomorrow.

I get the sense that some liberal natsec types just want those to their left to get on board with β€œUS empire but good” and I’m sorry but that’s not going to happen.

And I don’t just mean that politically - I have serious doubts about whether restoration is even possible, let alone desirable.

Screenshot from FT story by Katie Martin, with final 20 or so words highlighted:
"And yet, every conversation I have had with analysts and investors in the past few days, and the tone of almost every research note, has been something like this: β€œDon’t worry. Yes, this could get bad. Very bad. But Donald Trump doesn’t want high petrol prices in the run-up to the midterm elections in November, so his military will not stick around. The conflict won’t last long, oil and gas supplies will quickly get back to normal. History says the wisest path is to keep a cool head and stay invested, especially as the US, home to the world’s dominant financial markets, is nicely insulated from any energy supply shock.”

I mean it's just extraordinary that all these fund managers, analysts etc had no idea that any huge shock to the energy complex will absolutely mess with the US gasoline price regardless of how "self-sufficient" they are with oil

ICE heavily relies on agencies of all kinds to fuel the deportation machine, but over the past decade they've increasingly relied on the police-to-deportation pipeline to do so. Read the growing list of reported cases of law enforcement collusion with #ICE in NY state: bit.ly/NY-ICEwatch

Politico forging new heights of media treating John Bolton like a normal expert and not a guy who's spent the last three decades in a furious struggle with Lindsay Graham and Matthew Kroenig for the title of Man Horniest For War On Iran.

Trump Parties With Millionaires as American Troops Die Millionaires, Republican Party elites and big-spending donors were at Mar-a-Lago to party while Trump’s war raged across at least 10 countries.

Trump partied at Mar a Largo while US servicemembers, Iranian kids, and many others died in his war. Any member of Congress who votes against this week's War Powers Resolution is voting for more of this callous dereliction of duty -- and more death.
