I'm tired of adulting. Every decision I make seems to be the wrong one.
It's saying "I don't accept the claim that god(s) exists". Which is weaker than, and not equivalent to, asserting/claiming that a god does not exist.
It is even compatible with forms of agnosticism. For example, although I suspect there is no god, I know I can never prove it with certainty.
Many atheists don't define themselves that way, so you need to be careful with your terminology.
My atheism is simply "I don't believe in a god", and that position requires no faith.

But at this point we're starting to go around in circles. You've given me something to think about, and I hope I've done the same for you. I appreciate the civil discussion, as it's a rare thing to come across when talking on this subject.
- people kill "in the name of atheism", when those who apparently do exactly that are instead acting on behalf of anti-theism, which isn't an equivalent statement.
They're not killing because they don't believe in god, but because they also believe that no one else should.
But you said yourself that anti-theists often don't use the term and outright. And if the National Socialists or DPRK are any example, names aren't always accurate in their literal description.
My point is just that despite your argument, I still don't think it's fair to say that -
For example, motorcycle gangs are a subcategory of people who ride motorcycles, but we don't ascribe the crimes of those gangs to all motorcyclists, because the motorcycles weren't the driving factor. It's what the gangs bolted on to that identity.
Agreed, but I think I said as much in my initial reply. Just because it is a sub-category, it doesn't mean that atheism deserves the credit for those deaths when it was something else that was bolted onto it (anti-theism) which was the main driver.
