We are just returning to the idiotic adventurism of a century ago. When the US wants something it takes it. The Spanish-American war is a good example.

Looking forward to listening to this. I wonder how much of the West's stance is less about short term returns, but just plain hubris. The West (i.e. the US) does have a very big military stick and likely feels impervious to various international threats. Overconfidence is a weakness unto itself.

It's probably less about oil prices than it is about kicking Russia and China out of Venezuela. And isn't most of the old regime still around? Looks like Maduro was thrown to the wolves to cut a deal with Trump et al.

And with the material conditions of today being so vastly and incalculably different because of rapid technological progress since WW2 any talk of any such multi-century cycles is, to my mind, laughable.
