Maybe it was possible if an individual bank allowed it? But women didn’t have the legal right until the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. So until then banks could require a sign off by husband or father…
Dunno what the date or origin of the rule is - it’s apparently set out in the constitution. But one possibility is that it was inherited from the British. Women here didn’t have the right to get bank accounts or order on hire purchase without their husband’s sayso until 1975…
Apparently you can skip the requirement for 15 years’ residence in Nigeria as the wife of a Nigerian husband but not the other way round…
