Hey would you recommend a water resistant and simple watch for my very responsible 10yo? They’re ready for an adult watch. It doesn’t need to do anything other than tell time.

all of this happening in the same 24 hour period is completely nuts, no one is doing any actual due diligence here at all
Following the lies and hatred targeting trans folks during the State of the Union Address, numerous republican House representatives introduced a bill that would create A NATIONWIDE BOOK BAN.
Here's what it is and what to do: bookriot.com/hr7661-book-...
motherf*cking archivists out here like magic
An official letter from the Kansas Division of Vehicles dated February 23, 2026, with a redacted recipient address. The letter notifies the recipient that due to the enactment of Senate Bill 244, all Kansas driver's licenses and IDs must reflect the holder's sex at birth. It states that the recipient's current credential will become invalid immediately upon the law's publication on February 26, 2026, with no grace period. The recipient is directed to surrender their current ID to receive a new one matching their sex assigned at birth. The document concludes with instructions on how to appeal the notice if received in error, along with contact information for the department.
Kansas is sending letters to trans people telling them that their licenses will be revoked as of tomorrow and that they risk arrest for driving on a suspended license.
This is pure cruelty.

Dear Colleagues & Peers, My name is Deanna Zarrillo (she/they), and I am a PhD candidate at Drexel University’s College of Computing & Informatics. I am conducting dissertation research on the experiences of trans and gender diverse authors who have changed their name on academic publications and perspectives around digital identity more broadly. This work is aimed at assessing the community impact of post-publication name change policies from major publishers and enhancing policy around author privacy in the publication process. As part of this work, I am recruiting eligible participants for a survey on this topic. If you are an academic and have changed your name in the past, whether on publications or not, please consider responding to this survey! As publishing policies evolve, your experiences can help shape more inclusive practices for current and future scholars. You’re eligible if you: You are an academic student or faculty member (current or previous) with a history of publications in academic journals You are transgender, gender diverse, or otherwise self-identify outside of the gender binary. You have changed your name and have used, or have considered using, a post-publication name change policy or have changed your name on a publication in another way. Are fluent in English. What to Expect: This survey includes questions about your experiences with post-publication name changes and utilizing publisher policies. Your participation in this survey is voluntary. You may refuse to take part in the research or to exit the survey at any time. Partial responses will not be retained. Should you volunteer as an interviewee*, further consent information will be provided via email prior to the scheduled interview in addition to a verbal consent agreement at the beginning of the interview. Your responses will provide vital information to help assess current policies, identify barriers and challenges, explore impact, develop recommendations for improvem…
please RT! if you've ever contacted a journal or publisher to have your name changed on a publication, a friend and colleague of mine wants to hear about your experience! drexel.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

This is a new phenomenon and business model exploiting gaps in publishing. The cartel uses fake names to produce AI-written or plagiarised papers. Reference lists contain 100s of paid entries. If papers are retracted, no real authors are punished, and citations still count, even from retracted papers
I'm open for work again! I'm looking for interesting opportunities; want to work with me?
My experience includes web archiving and digital preservation, devops, and internal developer tooling. I'd love to put that experience to work for you and your team.
it's so difficult navigating the need vs want discussion with the community. sustainability is key to infrastructure (especially academic?) but it is so difficult to plan for maintenance vs new things we may need (want?) to be responsive to the community.
it's a wild balancing act!
We love a commission up here. (They often get answers.)
