I say this as someone who like DQ enough to have gone through the rigamaroll of setting up a google translate API to get DQX playable: it's a conservative series deeply invested in traditional values. that doesn't make it bad! but pretending it is above such observation is an act of exoticization
last post i'll make about this i promise: people can be uniquely defensive of Dragon Quest in a way that is inescapably a bit racist. this idea that it is this deeply tradition-oriented series that whose rituals and icons are so rooted in japanese culture can't really be separated from orientalism
obviously he's just an old man being conservative as old men frequently are (see also: comments about gender in DQ3R) but saying this about dragon quest specifically is so rude to me. you have literally the most lovingly crafted localizations in the world man you don't know how good you have it
The ironic thing is that for the past decade+, the English translations have actually punched DQ dialogue and terminology way the hell up. Which is something I think it's genuinely fair to land on either side of in terms of taste, but is definitely not a "flavor" strip.
