Thankful for the opportunity to work with OU College of Engineering's Summer Bridge program and engage with their undergraduate and graduate students, some of whom were collaborators and co-authors in this article. Happy to answer questions or chat more about our study!
An implication of our work is that socially engaged views of engineering need to be conveyed to students early in their education. Our findings also emphasize the importance of precollege engineering learning experiences.
Even though many of those students had engineers in their families, many nevertheless reported only a cursory familiarity with professional engineering. In contrast, students who had completed multiple prior engineering learning experiences tended to hold stable perspectives.
Findings: Our results point to the important role that early engineering learning experiences play in establishing students' perceptions. ESB was most likely to influence students' perceptions when they entered with few prior engineering learning experiences.
We investigated the extent to which students' views of engineering changed in the context of an Engineering Summer Bridge (ESB) program, in which engineering is promoted as a socially engaged practice.
π’New Pub Alertπ’ Thrilled to share our our new article, "Promoting sociotechnical perspectives of engineering during a summer bridge program," published in Journal of Engineering Education onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/author...
Thank you!
Currently in my home island of GuΓ₯han collaborating in community with local CHamoru teachers and scholars to develop culturally relevant data science learning modules. Looking forward to classroom observations in the spring when teachers pilot the lessons!
Thank you so much, Lani! Hope to see you again soon!
Thanks, Alex! Appreciate the message! π«ΆπΎπ€
Side note: the math nerd in me persuaded the hubby to get married on a weekday just to secure the 12.12.24 date π
A break from academic things and a quick personal life update: I married my best friend and the love of my life! Grateful for the opportunity to exchange our vows in front of our loved ones who came from near and far, including those who were able to Zoom in online! #lovewins #husbands #gaywedding

It truly is an uphill battle in Oklahoma in my line of work #iykyk but there is still good work happening. We received a half million dollar grant to support emergency certified secondary teachers on a path toward full certification. Read more in our pub here: oej.scholasticahq.com/article/1254...
Can data science/literacy be taught in elementary? Absolutely! These last several weeks of the semester, my elem math preservice Ts are learning the fundamentals of data collection, organization, and visualization. Theyβre excited to try some of these activities in their internship class next sem!
My dissertation and beginning research agenda focused on STEM teacher advocacy, which came about from my experiences as a #PAEMST awardee in 2014 and serving as an alumni liaison for the US Territories until 2022. Would also love to connect with other PAEMST awardees and finalists!
Cool idea!
