It’s #FindsFriday!
Here is a pair of Early Medieval sleeve/wrist clasps.
The clasp on the left was found last year. A few weeks ago in the same field the one on the right was found. They’re now reunited!

I had the pleasure of examining this with @judithjesch.bsky.social and it’s always a relief when we read the same thing 😆 check out this lovely spindle whorl with a puzzling #runic #inscription!

Front and back of a flat pointed oval seal matix. With broken, rough edges.in the centre is a simple fleur de lis. The writing is backwards on the matrix do would be the right way around on the seal. It reads SIGILL' GVNh' RELICT d T . d' PIL'

In honour of Meg's fab spindlewhorl here is one of my favourite women's objects for #findsfriday.

The simple lead seal matrix of Gunhild, widow of T(homas?)of Pil, probably Piley next to Cothay Manor in Somerset. finds.org.uk/database/art...

O.O fascinating object, hybrid English and Scandinavian text, women's literacy, named individual and donated to a museum available to all, just fabulous

This week I dropped of Leicestershire Museums latest acquisition (which was kindly donated by the finder). It is a spindle whorl inscribed with Scandinavian Runes. Follow the link to read Judith Jesch's exciting reading of the whorl!

I am currently at Charnwood Museum for a finds day. But thought I would share this nice example of a plated denarius that’s just come in for recording. The copper-alloy core is so clear, the majority of the coin has retained its silver plate

Last week I recorded this beautiful late Bronze Age copper-alloy socketed hammer. Less than 65 have been recorded on the PAS database and this one is complete.

I’d usually have a set of callipers but appear to have left them all in the office

This weeks has to go to this pesky token disguised as a jetton! It was issued by William Hall between c.AD 1610 - 1635. The orb design mimics Nuremberg jettons issued during the same period.

Jumping away from archaeology for a second to shout about our latest acquisition at Rutland County Museum! It’s a Pterosaur bone, the first to be found in Rutland and one of the largest examples to have been found
