Bad Bunny listing the countries of the Americas reminded me of when I visited Ecuador and Colombia and people would “correct” me when I said I was “American”.

They would remind me that we are all “American” in the way that others are referred to in a continental way, ie European, African and Asian.

“But what deeply troubles me now is that for all the steps we've taken toward integration, I've come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house." 

Dr. King said this famous quote on March 27th, 1968, mere days before his murder. But the context around the quote is interesting...

The ‘deck’ in “Deck the Halls” means “to decorate.”

But, it is not related or a shortening of ‘decorate.’

It comes from the Dutch word meaning “to cover.”

You also use it when you’re all “decked out.”

At the Civil Rights Museum today, I heard this musical rebuke to Richard Nixon written by Stevie Wonder.

I was struck by how much the words also apply to Trump.

Boston’s historic King’s Chapel unveiled a powerful sculpture honoring the 219 people enslaved by its early members and ministers. Truth must be told — even in sacred spaces. Acknowledging this history is a step toward healing. We must never forget.

Alberta Odell Jones broke barriers in the courtroom and was deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement, only to have her life violently stolen at 34. She gave everything for justice, yet never received her own. We must keep her legacy alive.
