This was bizarre enough but that the New Republic then goes on to quote bizarre-lizard-people-conspiracy-theorist-racist David Icke like he's some sort of actual person was kinda unexpected.

no. but I simply won't send money to individuals, whereever, for just that reason. only to institutions like World Central Kitchen or similar. there's no incentive to pick one person over another that way. it feels heartless but its fairer for everyone. plus, tax refunds in Canada. make govt pay too

..and repeat the cycle until you're caught (mean n of robberies = 7).
I suspect crowdfunding your rent or whatever works the same way. Getting one-time cash infusions from strangers doesn't fix the problem. it just delays the reckoning for the reason you're short of cash in the first place.

So you're in need of cash, you decide to rob a bank. It works! You get $7000. That papers over your money problems for a little while but it doesn't fix the reason you have those problems. You spend the $7000 and you're back in the hole. So you rob another bank...

It reminds me of something I read about robbing banks: on average crooks make 7 bank robberies before they get caught. The net take in any one is pretty low, I think maybe $7000.

When I joined as the head engineer of the Torment Nexus project, it was to work on fascinating technical problems and make the world a better place along the way. I am appalled to discover that the Torment Nexus would be used this way and, now that my options have vested, will be leaving the project

Nuclear experts undercut White House claims about Iran reactor at heart of case for war The Trump administration sent negotiators without nuclear expertise to lead talks on Iran’s enrichment program. Now, its public case for war centers on a facility that experts say cannot do what offic...

This is a technical story with stunning strategic implications. It is quite possible the US launched a massive war because Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff lacked the technical expertise to even understand what the Iranians were offering in negotiations. Absolute idiocy.

I was first introduced to this fascinating endorheic (closed) basin by a great article in American Scientist 15 or so years ago. Googling tells me the article was called "Runaway Devils Lake" by Doug Larson and was in the late 2011-2012 period but doesn't turn up a link to the article itself, sadly

The plus isn't just reduced pollution, electrification decreased travel time. Investment in electrification infrastructure could also be a boon for the economy in multiple ways. Jobs, less in medical bills, fewer sick days, both mean more money in consumer pockets to spend on local economies.

I discovered a couple of days ago that Google Scholar has started indexing young-Earth creationist pseudoscience in with actual science.

So Google continues to both actively and passively degrade the value of their primary product.
