Reyat-suki’s Winter Heart
This winter, I have not been inspired, not particularly, not generally, to continue the tale of "The Green Man in Winter", but I thought that perhaps, with the onset of spring, on the last day of the shortest month of the year,1 I might feel inclined to finish the story. I think my trouble with this tale is that it does not have an authentic ending, and none of the endings I know are good ones.

Holy Curiosity
"A man should be mourned at his birth, and his death celebrated with jubilation. Once he enters adulthood, he should live alone as soon as he is able to make his own choices. Only in this way will he have time enough for holy curiosity, for fostering and advancing his foraging skills, and seeking the truth." Darren Curlewis Withins, Grandiloquent and Manifold Proclamations from Inzeetik Terrafta, Lee & Shepard, 1883

Irreshkwilmat was the Correct Answer
Our best guesses were wrong. This mask was neither the demalion Ummusenyobi nor Annaistrem-teyniva of the Annsugamfe. She was a variation of Irreshkwilmat, probably an earlier version of the mask, on its way to becoming Icon Number Fifty-Seven, Irreshkwilmat and Her Shadow.

The Resemblance of Genuineness
"We all tell lies far more than we realize, to other people, and to ourselves. It is our way, the way we were taught as children, when we learned language; we were taught to tell stories. We were taught to pretend words were real, and as adults, we believe our reality is true, because it has always felt true."

Sparrow Day
The first day of February is the first day of Imbolc, which for jackalopes is Sparrow Day, or Day of the Sparrows. This holiday recognizes the gifts of sparrows, and any other small, gray, brown, gray-brown, or brown-speckled bird that does not flee to warmer climates. Today we can thank all the little wild birds for their presence, for staying beside us during the cold desolation of winter, making the season less lonely with their quick flight and bright song.

Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?
“A man may do both,” said Aragorn. “For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!”

It Was Thirty Years Ago Today…
At the bottom, at the beginning, it is all black and white. Black ink on white paper. The line. The mark. The tip of the pen touches the surface of the world.

Chisel Marks in Sandstone and Chalk
First, do no harm. Don't be evil. Those two statements, and others like them, come from a place of complacency, arrogance and ego that is the grandiose culture of American individualism. I am not especially familiar about growing up in other countries but children in the United States are taught from a young age to believe that they can, and will, change the world for the better.
