Scotlandβs Pictish carved stones, dating from the first millennium CE, display a number of symbols of unknown meaning. Some symbols show animals, some are abstract/geometric, but the same designs can be found from Shetland to the Borders

On a cheerier note, her and her sister managed to get me to spend a small fortune on face wash for them, another small fortune on drinks they saw on the internet and their mum texted me to get me to buy new bedside tables.
May as well spend it while we can I guess.
This morning, on our way to buy her a new swimsuit because she has swimming at school in the morning and I forgot to order one, my daughter said "People at school are saying that we are about to have World War Three, is that true?"

Thanks for giving it a go. All the places in it are real places, and most of the historical events mentioned are real events (I may have taken a couple of liberties with them). If you like the fact that it is set in Edinburgh, the one I'm writing at the moment is set during the Fringe.
I wasn't aware of Hiraeth but it seems so. I think the main thing is that it doesn't really translate.

This sums up my book perfectly - except for the murderous forces, magic, and morally ambiguous Fae, I don't miss them much.
I tried to find the right word but I couldn't. Then I came across Cianalas. Itβs a beautiful, weighty Scottish Gaelic word that goes beyond missing a physical home; it expresses a deep longing for a place, a moment, or a sense of belonging that feels lost or distant.
I moved to England 5 years ago for family reasons and I don't regret it. However, I do miss Scotland every single day.
Recently someone who read my book said it was like a love letter to Scotland and said it made them feel sad for me as they thought I was homesick.
